How does temperature affect ink?

Most ink is a simple suspension of pigments or dyes in water, though much more complex variations exist.

Most modern forms of ink are not significantly affected by moderate changes in temperature, but there are a few effects possible to varying degrees depending on the particular ink.

Like all fluids, a decrease in temperature increases viscosity, affecting the flow of ink.

An extreme decrease in temperature will, of course, freeze the ink.

Extremely high temperature will, of course, vaporize ink.

Low, or freezing temperatures as well as high temperatures can result in altering properties of the suspended particulates causing them to precipitate out and making the remaining dissolved or suspended particles less effective as coloring agents.

It is unlikely that increases in temperature, below boiling, will induce chemical changes beyond those affecting solubility mentioned above, but this may be a rare event in some specialized formulations.

There are many dyes that are affected by age, light, oxygen and temperature and are therefore inappropriate for use as ink, but that does not mean that such deficiencies are always properly avoided by all manufacturers.

Conduction is heat transfer by bringing two systems at different temperatures into physical contact.
