What is relationship between dry density and moisture contents?

Dry density (DD) is related to the moisture content (MC) using the following:

DD = DB / (1+MC)

Where DB is the bulk density of the material.

Does porosity affect the strength and properties of building materials?

Yes. Porosity is the void space between grains or clasts of a solid material such as the gaps between the grains in sandstone.

Rocks that have higher porosity are typically less stiff at small strain values than more porous rocks as the initial deformation closes up the pore spaces which is relatively easy to do compared to causing deformation of the solid clasts.

Pore spaces are also preferential pathways of weakness through a material and as such fractures are more likely to form connecting up porous regions of a solid. As such the more porous a given material, the easier it will be for a fracture to propagate through it.

Also porous materials are more likely to contain water which can have a signficant impact by causing significant reductions in the materials the compressive strength.

Why do engineers need to have management skills?

It is very useful for chief, senior or lead engineers to have an appreciation and understanding of management skills because invariably they need to work with management to get the job done. When they come up with solutions, they need to understand the consequence of those solutions in terms of budget, timeframe and effect on available resources. So although the engineer may come up with the best solution around, it may be impractical to implement because it may cost too much, take too long to build or need resources that just are not available in the timeframe. Engineers find it very useful to have an understanding of some of the softer management skills such as communications, negotiating, resource management, and other skills that have a direct bearing on the solution such as health and safety, legislation and risk/opportunity management. To be truly effective engineers need to work in partnership with management and the people doing the work, so an understanding of how they do their work can only help the whole process. A good engineer can often challenge management thinking to make sure they are on and stay on the right track, and help them get out of a mess should it develop.

Why are rivets heated to red hot temperature during riveting?

There are two reasons rivets are heated to red hot temperature during riveting: to soften the metal so that the head on the opposite side can be formed by hammering the metal, and to make the rivet longer while the head is being formed so that as it cools the rivet will shorten and pull the riveted metal plates tightly together.

What is the span of the Ponte Vicchio Bridge?

Construction on the Millau Viaduct began on October 16, 2001 and the viaduct was opened on December 16, 2004. In total, it took 3 years 2 months from start to finish.

Why should civil engineers study basic electrical engineering?

It's been about 60 years since I was in engineering school but at that time civil engineers were not required to take any electrical engineering courses.

What is raveling of asphalt pavement joints?

Raveling is loss of pavement material from the surface downward and is caused by the loss of asphalt binder (deterioration), ultraviolet exposure, traffic frequency, weather conditions, asphalt mix design, and compaction of the asphalt during construction. As the asphalt binder in the pavement wears away, the appearance starts to turn grayish from the fresh, black look of new asphalt. Also, as the binder wears away, aggregate particles begin to break away. This begins with fine aggregate particles breaking away and, consequently, exposing the coarse aggregate.

What does HEX mean with respect to construction equipment?

HEX, short for Hexagonal, applies to a type of turret lathe, common in automobile plants and parts workshops, that has a series of 6 tool heads for progressively shaping auto parts in a hexagonal turret. The shape is visible as one views or operates the machine. These are normally semi-automatic. the machinist sets up the machine- has the tool bits in the proper sequence, tightens the work in the vises or clamps- and making appropriate safety checks- presses the Green Button. After the pre-programmed sequence is complete- out drops the appropriate gears, cams, etc , ready for the production line. Hex Turret lathes were so popular in Detroit a number of automakers used a Hexagon as a trade mark. at various times Pierce ( usually styled Pierce-Arrow) and Packard had Hexagon trademarks. It was claimed Packard made their own lathes ( through a tool subsidiary which may still be around) Naturally, quality was tops. This is not at all unusua. Pratt & Whitney- aircraft engine builder and part of United Technologies originally and still made all matter of heavy duty production lathes, milling machines, etc. so Hex refers to Hexagonal.

What was the smooth outer covering of the pyramid created?

Egyptians basically depended on their land itself for all their constructional needs. Egypt as we know is a sandy desert, but what lies under its hot red sands is a rocky terrain. The Nile passes through a canyon and deep gorge , if you don't believe my previous sentence.

Now to the question, THE PYRAMIDS outer covering was of PURE LIMESTONE. It is now almost eroded (otherwise you could have scraped it out for some business_ been a millionaire by now). Even the stone blocks used are limestone and were later in sandstone.
