What is discouraged in the US during the cold war?
Almost everything that is acceptable today (political correctness) was definitely taboo in the 1960's which is partly the reason the 60's had so much turmoil...that "political correctness" was trying to "break out" into society in the 1960's, and was clashing with the traditional American way of life.
Feminism (called the "Women's Lib Movement" during the 60's) & the Civil Rights movement (racial integration), along with the growing same gender rights movement were clashing directly with traditional America...a traditional America which called for war against communism and the resulting war in South Vietnam. The new movement people of Feminism, Civil Rights, etc. wanted NO PART of the "traditional American's" war. Sometimes referring to the Vietnam War as the "White Man's War" by some of the Civil Rights people.
To simplify the answer: Almost anything that is acceptable today, was not acceptable during the 1960's. Almost anything that is NOT-acceptable today (smoking cigarettes for example) was totally acceptable in the 1960s.

How many people were accused of being communists by Joseph McCarthy?
It's difficult to actually say. He's such a polarizing figure in our history,it's hard to find truthful information that's not manipulated to make him look one way or another. In one paper, he accused close to 60,but some of his enemies exaggerate and say that he accused nearly 205.The facts are that many of the people he accused were in fact communists, as revealed by declassified documents from the C.I.A. and K.G.B. So,yes, he was zealous, and perhaps a borderline demagogue, but he wasn't just covering his eyes, spinning around, pointing, and then declaring, "He's a communist!"
