Suppose you want to connect your computer to an ISP using an ordinary phone line. The computer at your end needs a modem to modulate its digital signals (add them on top of an analog telephone signal) so they can travel down the phone line just like the sound of your voice. Once the signals have reached the other end, they have to pass through a second modem, which demodulates them (separates them out from the telephone signal and turns them back into digital form) so the ISP computer can understand them. When the ISP computer replies, it sends its signals through a modulator back down the line to you. Then a demodulator at your end turns the signals back into digital form that your computer can understand.

A box that we call a modem thus contains two different kinds of translators. There's a modulator (for transmitting digital signals out down the phone line in analog form) and a demodulator (for receiving analog signals from the phone line and turning them back into digital form)-and that's why it's called a modem.

Modulation is simply a fancy name for transmitting information by changing the shape of a waveform. If you send information by making the peaks of a wave bigger or smaller, that's called amplitude modulation or AM (because the amplitude is the size of the wave peaks); if you send information by changing how often the peaks travel, that's frequency modulation or FM (because the frequency is the number of peaks that travel per second). You may have heard the terms AM and FM before, because they describe how radio signals travel.

I'm not an expert, but I would contact a repair shop for advice. At the very least, I would stop using the laptop and put it in a well ventilated place in the hope that it will dry without incident. If you can open the computer without invalidating any active warranty, do so to help it dry out.

Computers cannot be protected from all system failures. To guard against this be sure that backups of the system are made on a scheduled basis. Also be sure to perform all regularly scheduled maintenance. It is also suggested that an uninterrupted power supply always be connected to the system.

To set a password on virtually any wireless router you can do the following: First, go to "Start" and "Run." Type in "cmd" without the quotes. When the Command Prompt comes up type in the following, without quotes: "ipconfig" Locate the box that says "IP Address" and remember that number. Click on "WEP" and select "Enable" and choose either 64 bit or 128 bit encryption. Click the box called "Passphrase" and type in what you want the password to be. Click "Save Settings." A "pen drive" as you called it has several other names. Usb drive, flash drive, jump drive, etc. They are simply portable memory that plugs into a USB port on a computer. As far as what you use it for, there are many options. You can use it to store simple documents, music, videos, and, with he right program installed on it, you can even store programs to use on any computer. The only limitation on them anymore is the memory. Obviously you can't store more than it can hold. Oh, and to avoid confusion, it is a flash drive, which means magnets won't affect it.

You should remove the cord and any other cords keeping the laptop in it's place, turn over, put it over a sink with the monitor hanging off, and take the battery out right away. Then wipe dry with a paper towel (including the battery!). After leaving it w/ a soft towel under it for about 12 hours, then check for any milk in the computer. If none put battery back in the battery. Turn it on and check for bad spots on the screen. Check ALL the keys to make sure they work. If not contact professional right away!

This is why if you lift a phone while the modem is in use there appears to be random noise on the line, this noise is the data in audio form.

A 2.5 inch laptop hard drive can be used in a desktop computer with an appropriate adapter and mounting. Laptop CD / DVD drives have proprietary connectors. To use them, you would have to partially disassemble the drive, and then connect the aforementioned adapter.

An output device is anything that can output information from a computer. Therefore, a projector that is conected to a computer is as much an output device as a screen, a printer or communications port.

Your best bet is to remove all system batteries, and the power cord, then remove the CMOS battery, and wait like at least 20 minutes. Then put the CMOS battery back in, and then the system batteries, and power cord. You will have to set the clock, and boot order, as well as any system specific settings.

I got that you have to remove the cmos battery. My Question is about just that. what comes off the back first. I have a Acer Travel Mate 6460. I am not opposed to removing the back cover and getting to the Cmos Battery. I just need to kn ow the process. I don't want to cripple the machine for ever being ignorant. I need instructions with a couple pictures or plans so I do it correctly. Do you have any plans or scematics for the Acers?

Most often this is caused by your sound card drivers failing to load. You probably need to reinstall your soundcard drivers.

Simply do a google search for your sound card plus the words 'driver download' & you should be able to find them in a jiffy.

The microprocessor (which contains the CPU and sometimes other circuits) is usually attached to the motherboard by a zero insertion force socket (which is soldered to the motherboard). On some motherboards the microprocessor is soldered directly to the motherboard.

Pretty simple really, just put in the XP CD and boot from it.

In some cases you may have to go into the BIOS menu (or setup menu as its sometimes called) and change the boot sequence to boot from CD first. The process of entering the BIOS menu changes from maker to maker, generally youll hit F2 F10 or delete during the startup process.

Once you've gotten your system to boot from the XP CD, just follow the on-screen instructions, its pretty straightforward.

Note: When you get to the format stage, if you decide to format the hard drive always pick the quick format, the not-quick format can take HOURS & isn't any better really.
