How were computers used in the 1950s?

Computers were used in the 1950's, some of the most important inventions for the development of computer happened in that decade. Magnetic data tape drives, and transistors, not to mention the first integrated circuit board. These buidling sized machines were used for anything from insurance companies to U.S Air Defense.

Is supercomputers a large computer?

some have been big, some have been small. what makes a supercomputer super is not size, but performance compared to other computers of its time.

In fact some of the highest performance supercomputers have been among the smallest sized computers ever built. Seymour Cray's last supercomputer before he died was only the size of a two drawer file cabinet. Smaller than any he had built before (and no microprocessors involved, it was still a third generation computer).

How does the computer misuse act affect a business?

The Computer Misuse Act places a responsibility on all organisations to process personal data in a lawful and proper way. It should make you feel a lot safer when you are on your computer.

What year was 4th generation computers invented?

Fourth Generation Computers (which are Microprocessors) were invented through the development of Transistors. Transistors were created by William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brarttain. Therefore, it is hard to tell a specific inventor of the Microprocessor.

Who created the company Apple Computers?

Apple was established on April 1, 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, to sell the Apple I personal computer kit. They were hand-built by Wozniak and first shown to the public at the Homebrew Computer Club.

Why use a computer?

The software is the series of instructions you issue to the hardware which are converted into electric pulses (from binary codes - strings of 0s and1s) to control the operations of the hardware; so, you see without the software the hardware cannot function.

Who invented the Ergonomic keyboard?

The ergonomic keyboard was invented by a man named Paul Gray. The reason he invented it was to help people who work 12 hour days for 6 days per week.

Who created eniac?

John Mauchly and Presper Eckert.

They based the machine's architecture and programming system on Vannevar Bush's mechanical analog Differential Analyzer at MIT and "stole" the idea for digital processing from John Vincent Atanasoff in Ames, Iowa. The decimal accumulators used ring counters acting as an electronic implementation of the wheels of the adding machines in use at the time.

What is the difference between analog computers - digital computers - and hybrid computers - give examples of each type?

Analog computers are also called continuous computers, as there are no discontinuities in their computations. A mechanical analog computer might represent variables by rotation rate of shafts, any given shaft can rotate at any speed and will smoothly accelerate or decelerate its rotation as the calculation proceeds. An electronic analog computer might represent variables by voltages, say any voltage between -20VDC and +20VDC with voltages smoothly varying as the calculation proceeds.

  • Bush differential analyzer at MIT, electromechanical, 1929.
  • Norden bombsight, electromechanical, 1930s through 1960s (used in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam!).
  • Various commercial electronic differential analyzers sold from 1950s through 1970s, electronic.
  • Murray/Walker simultaneous equation solver, electronic, 1949.
  • Vacuum operated cruise control in cars, mechanical/pneumatic.
  • Resistor/capacitor 3D mesh water table models, electronic.
  • etc.

Digital computers on the other hand have discontinuous states that they jump from one to another.

  • ABC: Atanasoff-Berry Computer, simultaneous equation solver, 1942
  • ENIAC, late 1945
  • UNIVAC I
  • IBM 700 and 7000 series
  • DEC VAX
  • Desktops and laptops
  • Both of the computers in your cellphone
  • etc.

Hybrid computers are simply computer systems that combine both analog and digital computers together. Usually the digital computer controls the analog computer, reconfiguring it and entering new data each time the analog computer completes one problem, to have it solve a different one.

  • Most were custom "one off" systems built by individual labs or universities by buying a standard COTS digital computer and a standard COTS electronic analog computer, and customizing them to work together as needed.
  • One example of such a machine used a DEC minicomputer and an analog computer to model heat flow from a nuclear reactor fuel rod to circulating coolant. The analog computer was programmed on its plugboard to do a rapid solution through a single radial slice of the system, the digital computer was programmed to enter new parameters into the analog computer for each slice starting at the coolant entrance end of the fuel rod and collect and record the results of each slice. The machine could solve the problem to adequate accuracy much faster and more cheaply than an all digital system or all analog system of the time period.

What is the effect of a computer virus?

When you get a computer virus your computer may get random pop-ups trying to make you download something or sell something to you. It can also spread itself across your P.C files and make it harder for you to remove it. If you do not have anti-virus software and are an inexperienced online user you should really get an anti-virus or just be more carful of what sites you go on.

How long ago was the internet invented?

Glad you asked what year the Internet begin

The Internet has been used by the military over the last several decades. Even as far back as the 60s and 70s. The world wide web as we know it began in 1989 and Tim Berners Lee was the person responsible for the browsing we know.

When was first PC modem invented?

Randall Erck invented the modern modem as we know it today. There were devices similar to modems used by the military, but they were designed more for the purpose of sending encripted nuclear launch codes to various bases around the world. Erck was still in high school when he developed a device that allowed himself to play his Atari Super Pong against a Japanese Auto Worker in Osaka Japan. After many failures, mostly due to his mom shutting off the Atari when it was time to eat, he finally hit upon the design of the modem we all use today.

Which type of computers are todays most widely used personal computers?

I am not referring to any statistics but i thinking it's the 13" to 17" notebook. They have replaced the desktop thanks to its wider range and better portability. The better ones also have hd screens and faster processors

What is the size computer cabinet?

Office furniture often goes on sale. But the best time of year to find the cheapest office furniture would be the beginning of a new calendar year. Most stores offer large discounts to make room for the new year's styles.

When was the programmable computer invented?

Babbage invented The Analytical Engine programmable mechanical computer in the 1840s but never built it.

Several programable electromechanical and electronic computers were invented almost simultaneously in the 1940s and built and operated.

Charles Babbage where his born and mother land?

Not certain, often given as Walworth Road, London, December 1792. There are those who quote Teigmnouth in Devon as the place. He was babtized January 1792, St Mary's, Newington, London. He died 18th December 1871, cause unknown and is buried in Kensal Green Cemetry, London

How do children use computers?

Judging by the amount of 'how do I bypass blocked web-sites' questions on here - It seems the majority would rather sit in school chatting to their friends - instead of paying attention to their lessons ! Still - McDonalds will ALWAYS need toilet cleaners !

Effects of piracy?

Some of the effects of piracy is:1. Decrease in the Sales of legal copies.

2. Retail Price Effects of piracy: Street prices are affected by the extent of illegal commercial copying. The availability of inexpensive, high-quality illegal copies reduces the demand for legal copies to the extent that some users buy illegal copies instead of legal ones.

3. A report states that in June of 1996, the largest ever video piracy operation in the United States was dismantled in New York. The nationwide counterfeit business sold more than 100,000 pirated videos a week, grossing approximately $500,000. The investigation, dubbed "Operation Copy Cat", culminated when search warrants were executed by the New York City Police Department, assisted by the MPAA, on 17 locations, including four labs. Authority arrested 36 people and seized 817 VCRs, 77,641 pirated videos, $40,000 in case, 37,000 blank cassettes, more than 100,000 sleeves, lables and other sophisticated equipment used in the duplicating process. The economic impact on MPAA member companies is estimated to be more than $87 million a year.

Who made the first Microsoft Windows computer made?

IBM manufactured the hardware. They also had their own operating system called IBM PC DOS, but licensed the very similar operating system provided by a little software company in Redmond, Washington founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen known as Microsoft.
