A general purpose computer has four main sections: the arithmetic and logic unit (ALU), the control unit, the memory, and the input and output devices (collectively termed I/O). These parts are interconnected by busses, often made of groups of wires.

The Antikythera mechanism is believed to be the earliest known mechanical analog "computer" by Derek J. de Solla Price. It was designed to calculate astronomical positions. Computer is important now-a-days, because it saves labors.......We also can say that computer as a labour saving machine. At ancient time there was need of 5 peoples to work on a data but now-a-days just by 1 person it is possible, through a computer, thourgh a database.

These days? Very little; in the old days a 'mini' was something that fit into 1 room; a mainframe typically occupied several rooms and a PC (micro) was a desktop...

Nowadays, my calculator is a micro if you want to use the truest sense of the word. Today's calculators are more powerful than the worlds first Mainframe computers.

The part of the computer that processes data is called the processor or processing unit. Older computers had a Central Processing Unit (CPU) . Modern machines often have more than one processing unit. The processor fetches and decodes the instructions that make up the program as well as doing the arithmetical operations.

The earliest recorded calculating device is the abacus. Used as a simple computing device for performing arithmetic, the abacus most likely appeared first in Babylonia (now Iraq) over 5000 years ago.

What made modern computers possible was the invention of something that could do calculations and other information processing with no moving parts and do it very fast. That something was electronic components. With electronic components, a fast and efficient machine such as Babbage proposed could be built with all four components essential to modern computing.
