The "computer" is usually a separate box, though in the case of laptops, it is hidden beneath the keyboard. In some situations, the computer is integrated with the monitor; the most notable example of this is Apple's iMac.

An LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display, is one that uses liquid crystals that allow certain wavelengths of light through, depending on how they are activated with an electric charge. Depending on how the crystal orients, they can let through no light, green, red or blue light, or white light. Most LCD's are lit from behind using a fluorescent bulb. An LED is an LCD that is lit from behind using an array of Light Emitting Diodes, which are much brighter, resulting in a display that is much crisper to the eye. Most projectors now are LCD projectors, that use dichroic mirrors to split white light into three specific colors. These three light beams are then combined in a dichroic prism to produce a full image that is transmitted through a projector lens. A plasma display uses gas plasma that reacts to an electric charge by emitting a specific color of light, much like a neon tube reacts to an electric charge. Each pixel of a plasma display has three separate cells, each containing a gas plasma that will emit either red, blue or green light when charged. Finally, a CRT, or Cathode Ray Tube display uses a charged cathode in a vacuum tube to create a stream of electrons that strike the screen. The screen is coated on the inside with phosphor, which glows when the electrons hit it. A special filter on the inside angles the electron stream so that it produces the correct colors on the screen.

Yes and no. A monitor can support several different screen resolutions. A CRT monitor can technically support any screen resolution sent to it, although the screen may be unreadable at extremely high resolutions. An LCD monitor supports a strict number of resolutions, but almost always more than one. The resolution that your screen actually uses (or tries to use) is specified by the video card, not the monitor. So purchasing a high-definition monitor won't do you any good if your video card is only capable of displaying 1024x768.

If it is just dust collected on screen treat it like a pair on expesive glasses with those special transparent film on it; try a scrub-less lint free cloth seen in electronics like a PlayStation Portable (Those nice cloths). If dirt or scratches occur try using a scratch-fixer solvent or simply replacing the "front glass" last time I checked that front glass it the cheapest part on the TV. Don't use windex because it has alcohol; it eats the film up on the front glass.

Either a commercial cleaner you can buy or a 50/50 mixture of Distilled Water and Isopropyl Alcohol. If there are not fingerprints on the screen just just plain distilled water. Do not use tap water or drinking water of any kind.

If the IBM laptop you use has a VGA port you just connect your monitor cable directly to the port. Then turn on the laptop and it should install the drivers needed to use the external monitor automatically. If you laptop does not have a VGA port then you will need a "Laptop replica port" to add the VGA port so you can connect the monitor.
