In all honesty, there are too many picture formats to count. Each format has it's own pros and cons to it. Usually, it depends on the need for pictures in order to determine which format should be used.
JPEG - Most common, good quality, very small file size, saving a JPEG many times will lessen the quality of photos, most compatible
Bitmap (BMP) - very basic and are slowly being replaced, not compressed, could be very large
PNG - not fully compatible with windows, mainly used in Macs, can store transparency, very high quality, I don't believe that it is compressed.
GIF - very small, lower quality, only 256 colors, mainly used online
RAW - very high quality, not very commonly used, not compressed, very large file sizes
TIFF - same as RAW but smaller file sizes, best used with edited photos when quality and zoom are factors
Koala - only works with certain software, hardly compatible, little known about this format, is still very new
These are just some of the many formats. Personally, I use JPEGs for everything on my Windows PC but I do use PNGs when I'm saving photos with transparent sections.

The virus create an infected copy of EXPLORER.EXE in the folders:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 (or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32) and
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE (or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE)
To remove it, start Windows in protected mode, then delete the files EXPLORER.EXE on these folders (there are hidden system files, then you have to enable to display hidden system files).

You have a virus. It can be easily solved (temporarily) by Going to Task MAnager (Ctrl+Alt+Shift) and under the "Applications" tab go to "new task" and type in "explorer.exe" (without the "). IM not sure if these steps are correct for your laptop. Note: this doesnt get rid of the virus!!!!!!!!!!
