How many kids speak up about getting bullied?

Not sure if there are statistics on this, but at first kids tend not to say anything as they think it will get worse if they do.

It is best if they speak up straight away when they realise they are being bullied as the sooner they say about it the sooner it can be investigated. It is important that they tell their parents and School, and to keep insisting on something be done about it if they are not being paid attention to. They should tell them how it makes them feel being bullied.

What role can parents play in reducing cyberbullying?

The following comes from the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP), which I believe to be the best prevention and intervention initiative for K – 12 schools.

Tips for Parents: What to Do If Your Child Is Being Bullied

• Never tell your child to ignore the bullying.

• Don’t blame your child for the bullying. Don’t assume your child did something to provoke the bullying.

• Allow your child to talk about his or her bullying experiences. Write down what is shared.

• Empathize with your child. Tell him or her that bullying is wrong, that it is not his or her fault, and that you are glad he or she had the courage to tell you about it.

• If you disagree with how your child handled the bullying situation, don’t criticize him or her. It is often very difficult for children to know how best to respond.

• Do not encourage physical retaliation.

• Check your emotions. A parent’s protective instincts stir strong emotions. Although it is difficult, step back and consider the next steps carefully.

• Contact a teacher, school counselor, or principal at your school immediately and share your concerns about the bullying that your child has experienced.

• Work closely with school personnel to help solve the problem.

• Encourage your child to develop interests and hobbies that will help build resiliency in difficult situations like bullying.

• Encourage your child to make contact with friendly students in his or her class, or help your child meet new friends outside of school.

• Teach your child safety strategies, such as how to seek help from an adult.

• Make sure your child has a safe and loving home environment.

• If you or your child needs additional help, seek help from a school counselor and/or mental health professional.

When did cyberbullying start-?

Answer

Cyberbullying quite simply started when the internet became a common tool for anonymous users to say what they please without thinking of the consequences to the other anonymous users on the internet. So really, cyberbullying most likely started in the mid 90's when the internet became immensely popular.

Answer

Cyberbullying has been around as long as the venue for it has been around (the internet). When America Online launched in the early-to-mid 1990s, and "surfing the web" first became popular, cyberbullying was born.

What are some good comebacks to sexually motivated insults?

There are two answers to this question:

The first is to use your smart tongue to come back with witty, biting remarks that put the bullies in their place and keep them there. There have been many accounts from people who were not big or strong at school, but kept the bullies at bay with their sharp remarks. But it may not always be wise to make sexually motivated insults back at them. That puts you on the same level as them. If there is an investigation you may be found equally at fault. Your only excuse is that they started it, which may be difficult to prove. The second way might be better.

The second way is to ignore them, but take up the issue with someone else in authority. Sexually motivated insults are illegal in most countries and are certainly bullying if they take place in a school or a workplace. Managers, Union representatives, teachers and school principals all have a duty to keep a safe environment for their workers and pupils. If they don't listen to you at first, keep telling them, and go over their heads to theirmanagers, if they do nothing.

What are you to do if you are being cyber bullied?

Report it. If it is happening on a social networking website, or a forum, for example, report it to the website (you will find appropriate email address/help section in their FAQ). If it is happening on WikiAnswers then inform a supervisor. If you are being cyberbullied on an IM program or somewhere else on the internet then always tell someone. I.e your parents or another adult you can trust. Also, if it's on IM then you can use the block feature to prevent this person from talking to you. You can also block the person that is bullying you so that they cannot contact you anymore. If the bullying gets severe and you aren't being listened to the people who run the site where you are being bullied, or you can't get hold of them, then don't hesitate to contact the police, bullying is a serious offence. Obviously you don't call 999 and tell them that you are being bullied unless you are at serious risk but you contact the local police station and take the print screen images of the bullying with you. The police will be able to find out who was bullying you, if you didn't already know who was, and they will be able to take serious action.

How long has English been around?

since about mid 5th century

Expanded answer: The modern English language has its linguistic roots in several ancient Anglo-Saxon dialects known together as "Old English". These dialects began showing up in England during various waves of migration and invasion during the 5th century. Old English is closer to German and Old German than it is to what we today know as English, and is unintelligible (in either written or spoken form) to English users that have not had special education in the ancient language. Old English and English are not really the same language, though the latter developed from the former. "Beowulf" was written in Old English.

Old English began transforming into "Middle English" with the first of the Norman invasions in the 11th century, which added a strong French influence to the language. "The Canterbury Tales" are written in Middle English. While many words are recognizable to modern English users in print (with many spelling and grammar differences), the spoken language is pronounced in ways that would not be used in the modern language and would be unintelligible to modern English users. It should be considered a separate language.

"Modern English" dates from the mid-15th century, alongside what is called the "Great Vowel Shift". As the phrase implies, the tone or phonetic value of some vowels were changed. Also, the meanings of some common words changed. During this time period, the English government spread the common usage of a London dialect, and the use of printing presses helped standardize spelling. By the time of Shakespeare's plays, the English language had become what we today would call "English", even though there were still many differences in individual spellings and of course there were regional dialects and accents as there are today. Fluent users of written English should be able to read modern printings of Shakespeare's works without trouble. Modern printing is specified because printers of the day used some typesets and characters that made printing easier, or were common abbreviations, which are not used today and can obscure meaning for those who are unaccustomed to seeing them.

So, the answer is: The language that English speakers use today in the 21st century is only about 500 or 600 years old, though it has its roots in ancestor languages that are up to 1500 years old. A very large portion of modern English vocabulary is even younger, dating back to only the last few hundred years, as scientific and technological advances have led to concepts (and words to describe them) which were unthinkable in previous centuries.

How do you intimidate a cyber bully?

The best way to get to a cyber bully is not giving them what they are looking for, such as attention! The more attention you give it the more you feed into it.
