What is the name of the village church in Sainte Mere Eglise FR on which paratrooper John Steele was caught on 6644?

Better name would be Church of the Holy Mother

AnswerEvery place that I search for this, it seems to simple refer to this as the church at Sainte Mere Eglise. It sits predominantly on the main square. However, I found one reference to the name St. Mother's Church.

http://www.chuckallan.com/travel/europe/StMereEglise.html

The stained-glass windows of the church are a tribute to those who

liberated St. Mere Eglise. At the upper left are airborne wings. At

the upper right is the parachute and glider that made up the badge of

American Airborne Command. The lower left cut-out shows the insignia

of the 82nd Airborne Division (AA for "All American Division"). The

faint parachutes at the lower right are a constant motif in the

windows. The symbol of the Free French (the Cross of Lorraine) is

shown bottom center.

One thing the Allies did to mislead them was to come up with a fake title and invation. The real D-day was Operation: Overlord in Normandy. the allies used a lot of code names and disquises for this great Invasion.

ANS 2 The allies went to a lot of trouble to make a fake army in Norfolk (nearer to Calais. ) This army had thousands of cardboard and rubber tanks, trucks and tents. Gen George Patton also very visibly visited and drove around the area to give the impression this was his army that would soon invade over the Strait of Calais.

What was the result of the d-day invasion?

The result to the invasion was that it successfully gave the Allies a foothold on Nazi occupied France. The Germans were forced to retreat in a matter of hours. However the cost of Allied lives was high at around 2,500. It was not nearly as many as the losses in the Pacific. Taking the islands such as Okinawa, over 12,000 Americans were killed. The Death Day invasion accomplished its task of starting the Allies push against the Nazi superpower and not long after the Allies were able to regain control of much of the land the Nazis had taken and later overall helped end the war.

Would it have been better if the US did a demonstration explosion over Tokyo harbor instead of dropping the atomic bomb on Japan?

The United States had only two atomic bombs. If we demonstrated the power of the bomb to the Japanese, many people feared that the Japanese might move Allied POWs to the area where the test was to be held. Also, if the bomb was a dud, and did not explode, the Japanese would be more determined to continue the war. If we exploded a test bomb, the Japanese might still continue to fight and one of our bombs would have been wasted. Plus, it was very expensive to develope an atomic bomb and we wanted to protect the two we had to use on Japan to end the war as soon as possible, thus saving Japanese and American lives.

What was the importance of dday?

D-Day was designed to be the last push on germany.

D Day was the first step in taking the war back to Hitlers Europe. At that time the Russians were pressing in the East and were taking most of the casualties in the war. Italy had been invaded by the Allies but a new front was required.

Dday was the day on which (at that time) the greatest sea armada ever known was lauched against the Normandy coast. The invasion area was set into five beaches. Despite what Hollywood says it was not a solely US affair. The Americans had two of the areas, the British had two and the Canadians had one.

What is better a gun or a knife?

Like everything this depends on the situation:

* If you are intending to cut a Sunday roast or a loaf of bread the knife wins * For target practice at greater than 20 meters, the gun is best * As the primary weapon of a guard at Buckingham Palace a gun is more dramatic * For opening mail the knife wins * As a signaling device when lost in the woods, I'd go with the gun * For First Aid such as removing a splinter, the knife has advantages

What did American troops wear on D-Day?

As it was June, the US troops were wearing SUMMER uniforms, that were made of cotton. Leather boots, black, olive green trousers and shirts, with an over jacket that had pockets in the chest, and web belts, with various ammo pouches and water canteens and a steel helmet, and helmet liner. In addition, they carried various things like extra ammo cans, machine gun belts or mortar rounds. Some had radios on their backs, and some others had explosive charges to blow obstacles, or strong points. Unit markings on the shoulder, and rank badges for the NCO's. Officers carried a pistol and a map case, and binoculars, but soon got rid of those, as it made then stand out too much, and they started getting shot by snipers, who could tell they were officers by their lack of a rifle. Smart officers learned fast to take off their rank badges and hide the map case. The parachute troops wore a slightly different uniform, the same olive drab colour in cotton cloth, but with different boots and pants. The jump boots were higher, to support the ankle, and the pants had cargo pockets to hold more stuff, like grenades, and food cans.
