A pit bull is a descendant of a 50/50 cross between an Olde Bulldog and a terrier of unknown variety, most likely an old terrier breed such as the Fox Terrier or Parsons Russell Terrier. The original name of the pit bull terrier breed was the Bull And Terrier, eluding to his origins as a cross between bulldog and terrier. They share the same dog type as bulldogs- they are both Molloser-type dogs. So while they are not bulldogs in the classic sense, their origins involve lots of bulldog blood.
Why do firestations use dalmatians as a mascot?
The Dalmatian dog breed is very intelligent, very athletic, very loyal and very adaptable to their surroundings.
They were bred in the Empire of Dalmatia, which is now part of modern-day Croatia, as military dogs, trained to protect the borders of the Empire alongside their military handlers.
The Dalmatian was introduced to England in 1862. The British Government decided to use the Dalmatian dogs at first as a guard dog, to protect fire-houses (fire stations) from thieves and sabotage. As well as to sit with the horses who drew the fire engines as the firefighters fought a fire, because they were very strong and expensive horses, hence targets for horse-thieves. Try to steal a fire-horse being guarded by a Dalmatian back in those days, then the lovable, loyal, cute dog would attack and probably kill you.
As the British began to quickly realise the incredible intelligence of the Dalmatian dog, they were trained for other duties too.
The Dalmatians were trained to run ahead of the horse-drawn fire engines and stand in the middle of crossroads to halt the traffic as the fire engines approached.
This lead to the real reason the Dalmatian became a mascot for firefighters in England and America.
Later however, the invention of modern engines, improved sirens and changing public morals made the Dalmatian's traffic-stopping abilities and aggressive guarding obsolete.
So, nowadays the Dalmatian is trained as a rescue dog. Trained to use their athleticness, intelligence, adaptability and sense of smell to detect humans trapped in buildings and natural disasters. The largest recorded use of the Dalmatian as a rescue dog is during the 9/11 Twin Tower attacks on America.

What was the Dalmatian Breed originally bred for?
Mainly to run behind horse-driven vehicles. They were also used as dogs of war, guarding the borders of Dalmatia. Dalmatians have a strong hunting instinct and are an excellent exterminator of rats and vermin. In sporting, they have been used as bird dogs, trail hounds, retrievers, or in packs for boar or stag hunting. Their dramatic markings and intelligence have made them successful circus dogs throughout the years. Dalmatians are perhaps best known for their role as a fire-apparatus follower and as a firehouse mascot. However, the Dalmatian's most important task has been his role as a coach or carriage dog, so called because they were formerly used to run in attendance of a coach. To this day, Dalmatians retain a strong affinity for horses, often naturally falling in behind a horse and cart in perfect position.

Why does my 10 month old dalmatian rip things around the house?
Ah the joys of puppyhood. Dalmatians are a very "needy" breed. When they are bored they are quick to destruct anything in site. I'd suggest finding a toy that he/she likes to chew(rawhide bone, pig ears, kong, squeaky toy, softy, etc.) and when you can't supervise him/her put her/him in her/his place with his toy (preferably in a kennel or crate-- we have their "dog room") and let him/her stay there. By giving them their own space with their own things the puppy is less likely to distroy your things.
Is a Dalmatian naturally more aggressive than a pitbull?
Not at all. Dalmatians are friendly and very playful. They wouldn't harm a fly, whereas pitballs have been known to go for humans and everything living. Dalmatians are gorgegous, they hardly bark and they are so affectionate. Chocolate dalmatians have been known to fight but now black and white. I have a dalmatian. He was fine with everything but he suddenly hates other dogs, and growled at some people, but recently we had him castrated and he is much more friendly, so my advice is to have him desexed.
