If you do musical theater then you might see costumes that resemble the character that the dancer is suppose to be playing. An example is that in one of my jazz/ musical theater i do i have to dress up like a boy because were are suppose to act like we are going to prom. There really is no specific answer its more along the lines of what your dance is about and what would show the story off to the audience better.
