Angela Isadora Duncan [May 27, 1877-September 14, 927] was considered the mother of modern dance. She became famous throughout the world through her tours of the United States and of Europe. She loved flowing clothes, and especially flowing scarves. She used them in her dances, and wore them in everyday life. The day of her death, Duncan wore a silk scarf that had been handpainted by the Russian artist Roman Chatov. The scarf was long and wide enough to wrap completely around her body and neck, and still flow freely behind her as she got into a car for a ride in southern France. But the scarf caught in the open-spoken wheel and rear axle on the passenger side. She was strangled, almost decapitated, as her body simultaneously was hurtled out of the seat and onto the hard, stone pavement.
