What did the teens of the 80's?

What did teens of the 80's ... do? As a teen from the 80's I went to school, played sports, listened to music, wrote, watched movies.. when we could. My weekends often were spent at a friends house, riding bikes, skiing, walking in the woods depending upon the season. Work was mostly summers only for most of us. What pitcher hit 3 home runs against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s and on his 4th time at bat was robbed of a 4th by Ducky Medwick?

Jim Tobin hit 3 on May 13, 1942, BUT it was against the Cubs, not the Dodgers. Boston Braves ace Jim Tobin became the only Major League pitcher ever to hit three successive home runs during a May 13, 1942, 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. In 1940, Tobin joined the Boston Braves, where manager Casey Stengel made him a relief pitcher. On May 13, 1942, by then a starter, Tobin became the only pitcher in modern major-league history to hit three home runs in one game (Guy Hecker hit three homers in a game in the nineteenth century).

Is the corsair better than the hellcat?

It's a better "fighter-bomber", that's why it was still in production into the 1950's and for the Korean War (1950-1953). Can carry more ordnance, probably further. The Corsair was like the Mustang...men liked 'em, and many became racers at the Reno air races in Nevada when the military sold them in the 1950's & '60s.

The F6F Hellcat was a completely different animal. The Hellcat was born and bred to kill the Japanese A6M Zero. The Grumman manufacturing company acquired a fully intact Japanese Zero from the Aleution Islands in 1942 (the pilot had crashed landed and died; the craft was discovered up-side down on a rough airfield). The 'Zeke" (Zero) was disassembled and transported to San Diego California where it was STUDIED; REASSEMBLED; then TEST FLOWN by US pilots. The A6M's weak spots and strong points were analyzed, digested, and then from there the "Zero Killer" was designed. The F6F had the highest kill rate against the Zeke than any other allied fighter during the war.

With the war ending, and the Zeke's shot from the skies, the Hellcat had no purpose to live anymore; it's reason to exist was gone. So it died too.

Most were shot down as target drones; some turned into missiles; and many were tossed overboard from their carriers on their return trips home (operation magic carpet, to make room for men coming home).

When did the radio program The Young Forty Niners play1940's or 1930s?

The Young Forty Niners radio show definitely aired in the early 1930s. When I was a pre-schooler, I remember my mother ordering a Young Forty Niner cut out set that included covered wagons, figures of people and animals that made the trek to the gold fields of California. Although I am almost 82 years old, I can still remember her setting up the cutouts on the dining room table.

Did France invade Germany from the south?

During World War II, it is not in fact accurate to claim that France invaded Germany from the south. Neither during the first year of the war (in 1939-40) nor during 1944, when a mixed force of Allied troops (including French divisions) landed on the southern coast of France and pushed north against German defenders, did France actually invade Germany. As part of Allied (in fact, American) armies, French troops did participate actively in the offensives into Germany that occurred at the southern edge of the Western Front in 1945.

How does the term 45 Caliber apply to the 16 inch projectiles of the main battery naval rifles of the Missouri class Battleships The projectiles are close to 5 feet long?

Caliber (for artillery) is the ratio of the barrel length to the bore diameter. So a 50 caliber 16" gun (Iowa-class) is longer than a 45 caliber gun (North Carolina-class), which gives a higher muzzle velocity, and therefore greater range and penetration.

Very true about the 1942 landing but only from what I have read. I'm an American who had relatives who fought in WW2 and I was brought up on alot of their stories and recollections. I remember my grandfather (6th army), who was in the Normandy landings, telling me about meeting up with french soldiers in Dec, 1944 at Strasbourg - a juncture from their south push from the french riviera landings (operation Dragoon). They were of the french first army, and the bunch of soldiers they shared a meal with had also fought in Italian campaign in the french corps. they spoke about the giant moari soldiers, who fought tenaciously and were full of humour, song and fun, who showed them an unusual very fast and physical ball game played with a pronounced target.

The french soldiers knew the seine-maritime area very well, north of where my grandfather landed at Utah beach, it was where they were born, and that he was very clear on. I have seen some maps of the towns he mentioned, and they are not dieppe but in the same region. Perhaps it was these very same men who returned to their homeland, which would make my grandfather very happy that they survived, like he did to finally cross the Rhine and scrap it out on German soil.

I know that game is called ki-o-rahi but it may have a french name also? I do not know? The game is played in some of our elementary schools.

How many vacuum tubes did the Harvard Mark I computer have?

None. The Harvard Mark 1 ASCC (IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator) was an electromechanical computer built for Harvard by IBM's Endicott NY facility in 1944. It was built at Harvard in 1949 using 5000 vacuum tubes and 1500 crystal diodes, along with electromechanical components. The Harvard Mark IV, built in 1952, was the first fully electronic design.

Why is August 17th 1945 an important date in Indonesian History?

August 17th is when Indonesia proclaim it's independence from all foreign occupation, being Japanese or Dutch or quite possibly, the Allies that just won the war and is on Philippines at that very moment. But international communities only acknowledged Indonesia's Independence somewhere around 1949, which most Indonesian didn't regard as sacred as August 17th, The Independence Day.
