The basic answer is as slow of a shutter as possible without blurring the picture. With no flash and no tripod I am not steady enough to get a sharp exposure at much less than 1/80th of a second. If there is a tripod involved things change. For pictures of people you might get away with as low as 1/40th of a second, but the people would have to know to hold more still than usual for the picture. 1/30th or 1/20th might be used with a flash, where you wish for dim lights in the background such as city lights are desired to be seen, the flash will expose the people and the shutter being open will give the background more time to come through. On a tripod I've exposed as long as 30 seconds, for star field pictures, or interesting pictures of buildings only lit by small security lights or moonlight. You can take a great picture in what seems like darkness with a tripod and remote, even better with a camera with mirror lock-up to get really sharp long exposures.

Reduce the mega-pixels (mp) - the size of the pictures. Unless you are planning to crop most of your picture, any thing bigger than 3 mega pixels is bigger than the screen of your computer. The smaller the picture you shoot, the more pictures you get. Click on! eD

Which sounds like a stupid answer, but it's not. There are a lot of good camera companies. In Japan, Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Mamiya are all good camera companies. Rollei and Leitz are both great German camera companies, Hasselblad is a fine Swedish camera company, and Sinar Bron is a good Swiss camera company. It also depends on what KIND of camera you want--the cameras Canon makes are nothing like the ones Sinar Bron makes. Canon and Nikon are the two largest camera companies right now, with Canon still the leader in quality cameras. Olympus has some great new technology that looks promising for the future.

In order to be a photographer, you don't really need any qualifications.

All you really need to know is the concepts of photography and exactly what you are doing. Also its good to have an understanding in what you are photographing, for example how skateboarders do what they do. You'll need good people skills if portraiture is what you want to get into.

You can get qualifications in photography but in my opinion, all you really need is the passion, and a good portfolio..

It also depends on content, some images inherently require more information to represent reasonably(ie they compress less during JPEG compression), so the image size may vary between 3-4MB and 7-8MB.

If you shoot RAW images or TIFF images, then those files are much larger (as much as 20MB/each) and you will fit much less on a card, like about 400.

An analogue camera uses film but a digital camera does not.
