How long does a verbal order have to be signed by the ordering physician?
Typically I have heard 48hrs on a verbal or phone order. The issue arrises when no signature is obtained. An order, whether paper, verbal or even written on a napkin is acceptable without that doctors signature. Obviousy if the date of the signature is over 30 days it starts to look bad on both the nurse, the agency and espeically the doctor since he/she ultimately approved the order and is thus responsible for signing behind themselves. I have found many times that physicians aren't as "up to speed" on this area as they should be. Also, agents signing behind a doctor is still not acceptable. Only a doctors signature is valid; and in Home Health not even an NP or PA can sign their own orders thus requiring a co-signature from their supervisors.

Also, as will any specialties, you can always place somewhere. Comptitiveness varies among programs too. Do relatively well on your board exams and apply broadly, you'll land a path residency.
