crankshaft gear mark is set at 12:00 and the gear mark on the camshaft is set at 6:00. Correct, and what confused me and many people is that the #1 cylinder is not at TDC there. #6 should be at TDC on the compression stroke as I recall.

No. But there are companies that make adapter mounts which will allow it to bolt-in without modifications. (Not cheap.)
Is type F automatic transmission fluid the correct fluid to use in a 1973 Dodge Dart 318?
You can use type F. I have seen that in writing several authoritative places (check www.allpar.com). I use it in my '65 Newport, which is the same transmission design as yours. Some people think "F" stands for "Ford", but I understand it means "Friction". It should give firmer shifts and less clutch wear. I don't notice a difference from Dexron III, but I also installed a shift kit for firmer shifts. ATF+4 should also work since recommended for my '96 Voyager 3-spd which is the same basic Torqueflite design.
