Dog Training

Dogs are intelligent companions that have been used to help man for centuries. Sometimes they need help to learn how to obey and assist their owners. That help is called training, and this category is for everything related to that training.

How often do you have to take a dog for a walk?

Yes! In fact, this may not be enough, depending on whether the dog also has time in a fenced yard or not. If the dog lives in an apartment or for whatever reason does not have a yard for exercise, (tying out on a leash does not count as exercise), then the dog MUST be walked, about 4 times a day, at least. Each walk doesn't have to be super long, but at least two of them should be long enough to tire the dog out.

If the dog has a fenced yard or fenced dog park to run around in and actually does run and play in that area, then the walks are more for socialization and training -- but at least 1 or 2 walks a day, still necessary.

Dogs need this walk time for exercise, socialization, bonding with the owner, etc.

It is absolutely necessary to their mental and physical health, and often for their continued "good behavior".

How do you stop misquitos from biting you?

Some tips on avoiding being bitten: At home: * Put screens on doors and windows * Use sprays indoors when mosquitoes are around * Use mosquito coils * Use a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide over beds at night * Turn on air conditioning if you have it - this is very effective at keeping mosquitoes out of a room Outdoors: * Wear a repellent cream or spray preferably containing DEET (diethyl toluamide); formulations containing less than 35% DEET are recommended because higher concentrations are no more effective (they just work for longer) but in rare cases may cause poisoning. Repellent should not be applied to wounds or irritated skin. * Vitamin B does not prevent mosquito bites. * Wear protective clothing such as long sleeved shirts, long pants and hats to minimise skin exposure. Clothing can be treated with repellent. * Wear light coloured clothing - ticks and other insects are more easily detected on a light background and tsetse flies are attracted to dark, contrasting colours. * Use screens on tents * Avoid places where mosquitoes are most active, such as swampy areas

Does neutering your dogs help stop them from peeing in the house?

It depends on the age of the dog when it is neutered. If the dog hasn't started lifting his leg to pee and you get him neutered chances are that he will never lift his leg to pee. If the dog is older neutering him will not "fix" this problem. No. Dogs mark their territory and if you have had a female dog in the house (even a female cat) they will often mark their territory, but it they were trained correctly from the time they were a pup then they shouldn't be doing this. I have a male dog, a female dog and a female cat and my male doesn't mark his turf in my house. When he had accidents as a pup I would take him to the paper down the hall (I paper train and also train outside for my pets) and have had no problem. My girlfriend has an English Sheep dog and never bothered to train him correctly and now he urinates on the edges of all sofas. You can go to any local pet store and get a spray to stop this behavior.

What does it mean when your dog bites their feet?

They are not eating their feet, but chewing on them. You would need to take your dog into a Veterinarian to get an acurate diagnosis but I would guess there is some sort of skin issue going on, such as a interdigital cyst or moist dermatitis. Check for a foxtail ot any other foreign object in between the toes or in the bottom of the foot. Check the feet thoroughly. Clean them up with an good antibiotic soap and pat them dry. A Vet would need to make a diagnosis for treatment. You do need to stop your dog from chewing on its feet though, can use a bitter spray such as bitter apple to stop the chewing.

What is the hardest breed of dog to house train?

Though there are many different breeds of dog, they are not all - the same. For example, if you took two - let's say, Collies - they are the same, because they are the same breed, right? WRONG! They both have their own personalities, so, like two human baby twins, they cannot be EXACTLY the same because they are not EACH OTHER, which makes them DIFFERENT! So, you see, even the same dog breed is different. However, to answer your question, I will tell you also this: Because there are no dumb dogs - just stupid, abusive people - all I can say is some of the smartest dogs - I am not going to tell you their names because then I would have to look them up - are in the breed of the Border Collie, the Poodle, and something else - I think it's the Labrador, I forget....
I am not a trainer and have owned one dog at a time in my life time. I agree that treats do not work for all dogs. I have owned a large golden retriever who was so full of life that he resembled Marley the dog who ate pillows and knocked over the garbage cans. The answer to train him was to take away his food and only offer him treats when he followed commands. As a smart and hungry dog he learned very quickly and followed my every look and command. On another hard to train puppy I have been in puppy school where a mutt rolled over and played every time the owner gave a command. Even the head trainer couldn't get that happy go lucky mutt to listen or follow commands. I think that the dog wasn't working on all cylinders. I now have a small dog. As a puppy my Brussel Griffon was very hard to train. This dog is not attracted to food or treats but looking for my husband (His litter mate). It took me 3 years to get this dog to walk on a leash without pulling ahead. He is now 6 years old and just yesterday he walked into pet store without pulling or trying to find dust in every corner to sniff. Every day he finds new things to fear. Cars driving by the sidewalk or the noise of the dish washer. In summary, I do feel that small dogs are harder to train. It is harder to reach down and snag them to let them know something is wrong. All trainer tapes show middle sized dogs and larger getting trained because they are easier to train. Caesar Millan is the only dog whisperer who has tackled snapping, barking, small dogs and I don't see any dog trainer own small dogs. This is only my thought and I have asked for dog training tapes specific for small dogs.

How many fingers do dogs have?

Unless the dog is a mutant it won't have fingers.

You could call their digits "toes", in which case, a typical dog will have 4 toes on each hind leg and 5 toes on each front leg. The grand total is 18 toes.

The front legs typically have 4 toes on the ground and a dew claw that doesn't touch the ground, which is to say, dog tracks show four toes.

Is it better to train a dog outside or inside?

It is good to train inside and outside so the dog learns to listen around the outside distractions and inside distractions. A fenced yard or unoccupied field would be best for training outside.

Answer: Initially you want to begin training your dog inside to build a solid foundation on certain cues. Once the dog is performing all the cues with very little error you should then move the training outside to generalize the behavior. Be sure that there is very little distraction when you first begin to train outside. As your dog performs better and better you can slowly add certain distractions.

Which dog uses a litter box?

Cats like to bury or cover their leavings

By providing a place that does not smell and is easy to bury it in the cat naturally use it.

Just a human manipulation of a natural cat behaviour.

I must remember to change the box today!

How do you train a Belgian Tervuren to heel?

Remember that teaching a dog to heel is different from teaching him to walk politely on a leash or not to pull on a leash. It is a very precise bit of training that is probably the hardest thing to teach a dog because it is so abstract.

All dog training comes down to reinforcing behavior you want and interrupting and redirecting behavior you don't want. The same is true of heeling. The difficulty with heeling from a training standpoint is that it is a position, not an action. People often confuse that.

In order to reinforce properly, you must have a very clear picture in your mind of where that heel position is. In a formal heel, as done in competition obedience, the dog is six inches away from your left leg and the seam of your pants stays centered more or less on a point halfway between his nose and the leading edge of his shoulder.

Probably the easiest way to start heeling training is to work in a secure area, such as a fenced in yard. Remove the dog's leash and start walking. Eventually your dog will become curious and walk up along side you. That's when you reinforce. Most dogs are motivated by either food or toys. So you can reinforce by offering one of these when he reaches the proper position. Some dogs are motivated by praise, but few people give praise correctly. It must be genuine and emphatic. Most people don't put enough heart into their praise and that's why it fails to motivate.

You don't want the dog to become dependent on constant reinforcement. So once he starts taking a couple of steps with you at a time, stop reinforcing for just one step. Very gradually build up the number of steps needed to score reinforcement.

There are other techniques that can be employed, but the one outlined above will not teach the dog bad habits if you make mistakes, and it will not injure the dog. To learn other techniques for training a dog to heel, enroll in a competition obedience class. Family dog classes won't cover true heeling, just loose-leash walking.

That is a very, VERY broad question. The answer depends on several factors, like if you want a program trained dog or to train your own. It also depends on what kind of service dog your are training. Go to Dogster.com and then to the Service and Therapy Dogs forum. They'll be able to answer your question more in depth.

What do you do when your puppy cries at night?

You can't stop it right away, but if you show it who's boss, it will eventually learn.

Answer:There is an old trick that sometimes works.

Take an old style wind up alarm clock (make sure the alarm is not set to go off). Wrap it up in a towel, and place it in the sleeping space of your puppy. The sound is similar to the hearbeat of the dame (mother), and may comfort a newly separated puppy.

How old should puppies be before they play with dogs?

The puppy should meet as many different dogs as possible as soon as they've had their shots. They should begin meeting tons of people as soon as you bring them home. Invite some friends over to visit the puppy and/or neighbors. The more socialized a pup is the better they will be as adults.

Do cows growl?

Cows do make a growling noise sometimes. They make different noises for different things. They might growl if they are stressed.

Whats it mean when a dog eats its own poop?

Dogs think poop is a treat actually - it is not at all abnormal although for humans this seems disgusting. It is not necessarily bad for them (like it might be for humans) but just kind of not desirable for owners. Obviously, the best thing to do is to keep them entertained with more desirable healthy treats, and keep them out of situations where they can do the former. For dogs, this really is a normal reaction. Be nice to your pets :)

Who is service dog?

Service dogs are dogs that are individually and specially trained to assist a person with their disability in the USA. Other countries may have different definitions. Service dogs may be wearing special equipment, tags, badges or other forms of ID but it is not required by law. A business may ask two questions to find out if a dog is a service dog....are you disabled and what work does the dog do for you.

How much are cavachon puppies?

It depends. You can get them really cheap at a kennel, pound, and a Cavachon rescue. You can get them really expensive at a pet shop and a breeder. I'd go with the kennel, pound, or rescue. It saves money and a life!

Since it is very easy to incorrectly train a guard dog and wind up with an aggressive dog that attacks family and visitors, resulting in lawsuits, guard dogs should only be trained by professionals.

Do puppy training pads really work?

Surprisingly, TARGET carries a good ARM & Hammer pad, its the cheapest which works for me. like 10$ for 30 pads. I went to petco or petsmart and they were 2-3xs as much!!

I don't like "NATURES MIRACLE" pads because the bottom would get soaked when i would have my mini doxin in the kitchen on tile, and the bottom made more mess smearing around and would step over it with her paws. Might as well not had a pad. its a small dog so u can tell any more urine wouldn't stand these pads.
