Why even bother with regional codes in the first place? It's nothing but an annoyance. What I do, is an online search for something like `hitachi+dvd+hacks' and see if I can find the regional code shut-off commands which can be entered from your handheld remote control and completely disable them. Then the regional codes are no longer an issue. Apex DVD players have ton's of code hacks and so do many others. Just remember to be careful to check more than one site before trying them to be sure everyone's on the same page with the code numbers. Remember too, you could disable you player so you do this at your own risk and I'll bear no responsibility for your actions. (Although I think it's kinda hard to mess a machine up, I know it can be done.)

Mine does avi fine and that was bought 4 years ago. I think DivX and avi files are the same format.

You actually have to download the updates from your player's manufacturer's website and burn the data onto a disc and then put it into your player. But players that are Wi-Fi enabled can receive and download their own updates

I assume you are talking about the Kinetic KA5100 system, the subject of numerous complaints and fraud warnings. This system is well known to be sold by 'white van' dealers on the street at prices that look to be bargains compared to the fictitious list price. You will need a surround receiver to act as the amplifier for these speakers, as they have no amp built in. Be sure to find one that has an amp for the subwoofer too, as the Sub also does not have an amp in this system.

Does your TV have HDMI, Blue Ray players mostly work on HDTV's with HDMI cable input. Once plugged in make sure your blue ray player is working correctly try turning it on then off again, and after that, if it still doesn't work It might be the disc.

Commercial DVDs from UK and Europe won't work with US equipment for two reasons.

The first and main reason is that commercial DVDs have a region code embedded. This code is for the sole purpose of preventing a DVD from one region being marketed and then played in a different region. There are some ways round this but all involve activities that breach copyright rules or equipment warranties and none are 100% reliable. For commercial discs it is much easier to buy a US version at a (normally) lower price than the UK version.

Non commercial discs don't have the same coding so IF the US DVD player will handle UK format video and IF the US television will handle UK format video, then it will play. Although most European equipment will handle multiple video formats, the same is not the case in North America where there is less demand for replay of other video formats. The only sure way to know is to try it.

Note that composite video carries an encoded color signal. It is PAL in the UK and NTSC in the US. They are not compatible. If the US television shows a black and white or oddly colored image, it might be worth trying to connect the DVD player using component video rather than composite or S-video. Component is a three wire interface and avoids the encoded color signal that is present in composite and S-video signals.

If US television equipment doesn't work, try playing the disc on a computer. The way the data is handled is slightly different and it may provide a solution if all else fails.
