It was said to have been founded by queen Elissa (Dido in Greek) of Tyre, the most important Phoenician city. She was the daughter of Matten, the king of the city and she inherited the throne together with her brother Pygmalion. But the people wanted Pygmalion alone though he was a boy. Elissa married Acerbas, a high priest and the second most powerful man in the city. Pygmalion had Acerbas murdered. Elissa decides to flee from Tyre. She and her party arrived in Cyprus and then moved on to modern Tunisia and asked the local Berber king for permission to have a temporary refuge there. Many Local Berbers joined the settlement and the nearby Phoenician colony of Utica asked Elissa to found a city.

In most cases, no. Only if the word is the first word in the sentence, or it is a specific name for one specific thing, place or person. What percentage black do you have to be to be considered African-American?

Legally, ethnicity is self-reported. Whatever race you feel you are, that is your race. If you are looking for a more practical answer, then if at least one of your grandparents is Black, it would be reasonable for you to consider yourself Black. One grandparent represents 25% of your heritage. If only one of your great-grandparents were Black (12.5%), it might seem a bit of a stretch for you to consider yourself Black, but you are entitled to do so nonetheless.

What are possible solutions to ethnic conflicts?

There are a number of possible solutions to ethnic conflicts and they are divided by external solution and internal solutions where an external solution leads to separation of the ethnicities and an internal solution leads to intermingling of the ethnicities.

External Solutions

1) Separate States for Separate Peoples: This is the avenue that is currently championed by the Palestinian Authority and Israeli Government for the resolution of their ethnic conflict. This is also the solution that has worked for India and Pakistan, Turkey and Greece, and former Yugoslavia. (Note: tensions in these regions are still high, but the internal ethnic conflict has dissipated. Any tensions would be reclassified as national conflicts as opposed to ethnic conflicts.)

2) Population Swaps: If two ethnic groups already have countries which represent their ethnicity, it may be more prudent to move the people than to move the borders. Turkey and Greece exchanged populations and this lead to the end of Turk Harassment in the Peleponnesus and Greek Harassment in Smyrna (Izmir). Similar exchanges occurred in Poland and Germany after World War II.

3) Ethnic Cleansing: This is not a desirable solution, but it does remove the ethnic conflict by exterminating one ethnicity completely. It worked in the era before such things were universally condemned and is the reason why there are no Native American-United States conflicts anymore (at least on the East Coast).

Internal Solutions

1) Autonomy: A different ethnic group will be given more internal power to govern its affairs that is greater than the jurisdictions given to the majority ethnicity. They may have a different style of government than the majority within this autonomous region. The Aboriginal Reservations in Australia are an example of such autonomous regions.

2) Ethnic Voting: In this system, each ethnicity registers for voting and gets a different allocation than they would naturally by population. This makes minority religions receive more of a voice than they would if they were only counted by heads. This system attempts to assuage conflict in Iran.

3) Ethnic Powers: In some countries, different ethnicities are de jure granted offices of government. In Iraq, the President must always be a Kurd for example.

What is your ethnic background?

An interesting question that is not just for an individual but for all Americans in the modern days of hypenated Americans. We are a Nation of Immigrants, and consider each American to be a part of the New World Melting Pot. There are Native Americans, African Americans, Irish Americans and other European variants. The Census Bureau records something called Pacific Islanders and American Indians and Alaskan Natives (AIAN) and Hispanic and Latinos and they exist but you will rarely hear about a New Zealander American or an Omani Ameri8can or a Turkish American. Puerto Ricans are listed on the Census Form but not American Samoans or Guamanians.

How do you identify exactly what race and ethnic background you may be without a DNA test, and should such a test be required or even desireable. Some will elect on the side of a National need to know and others will demand a right to privacy.

Here is the racial and ethnic background of an unborn American girl that will belong to and be loved by our family when she is born according to her genealogical record. She will be:

  • 50% Hispanic-Latino or in truth Mexican- American whatever that means.
  • 50% Hybrid American consisting of English, Czech, Norwegian. German, Arapahoe, Greek, Russian, Armenian, Lebanese, Cherokee-Scots-Irish-African American, French-Creole and perhaps some other form of Heinz 57.
  • She will be born an American Citizen as were her Parents, Grandparents, Great grandparents, and all but one of her Great-Great Grandparent who to the shame of the family tree was born in Canada.

What is the ethnicity of the last name Alexander?

It comes from the greek name meaning (alex) saviour (andros) man alexandros

I am done hearing it comes from Greece when it does not originate from there. Instead the name comes from an even ancient culture. This culture is the culture the scottish warriors base there fighting off of. The culture I am talking about is the Celtic. Everybody says the Celts lived after Ancient Greece started which is true, but use the name Alexander/Andros until the Celts came along. The Celts first used the name and the Greeks got the credit. No one knows much complete truth about the Celtic culture. Then many empires and kingdoms expanded and the Celtic culture was almost destroyed. The remains of the culture fleed to an island. They stopped being Celts and Scotland was created.

What do Americans describe themselves in terms of ethnicity?

If you were born in the U.S. then you are considered American technically. However, most Americans will identify you by race. So if you are Puerto Rican, Spanish, Indian, etc, you are considered of "foreign" decent. If you were not born here, forget it, you are a foreigner. Even if you obtain citizenship, you are not American. Same goes in the opposite direction. If I move to Mexico, and live there for twenty years, I am still not a Mexican! I have blonde hair and blue eyes.
