Sauron tricked them and forged his own ring, dominating and syphoning their rings' strength. The elves joined with the Arnorians and Gondorians to defeat sauron. Then When Sauron arose a second time, many of the elves began to flee middle earth on white ships. Sauron was eventually defeated when the ring was destroyed. The remaining elves set sail to Valinor, never to be seen again. Arwen, daughter of Elrond, remained in Middle Earth, but in time became mortal and died of sorrow after the death of Aragorn, and lies now in the heart of Lorien.
