Their really is no way to completely protect a horse from any type of flies. The most common solution is to spray fly spray. Also you can put a fly mask on the horse. But their is really no error free way to keep them off. Sorry!! But the Fly spray I use is pretty good, its Pemectrin II. It works pretty well, but it detereorates after 2 hours, so its not that good!!

Hope it Helps.

My horse has a swolen cheek and I think it was a sting from a fly could it be anything else?

It could be a number of things. It could be like you suspect, a reaction from an insect. But he may have injured himself. He may have been kicked by another horse if he is with others. It could be an infection of some sort or even an infected tooth. Watch it closely. If it was an insect it should begin to go back to normal within a day or so. If not or if you see other symptoms do not hesitate to call your vet.

Why would flies suddenly appear and disappear?

Because they fly away! and did you know flies land and pee every four seconds?

ok...so let me clarify a bit. I like the clever answer, but what happened is, at my friends' house a bunch of flies just clustered in one area, there was nothing there, the house is clean, and by the next day (it took a whole day) they were gone. Aside from the obvious reasons flies would be there....does anyone know if there is any other weird reason they would just be hanging out in one place, a whole bunch of them, and then the next day, the entire group be gone. So anyone else know?
