Unbeknownst to many, not all African-Americans are Protestants (Baptist or Pentecostal) or Moslems. Statistically 13% to 15% of the Black population in the United States identify themselves as or are devout practicing Roman Catholics (this percentage is far greater when one includes Africans from the African Continent now living in the United States). Aaliyah and her family was/are in that number and, in fact, Aailyah and her brother Rashad were raised and educated theologically and culturally in the Roman Catholic faith. As a Roman Catholic, Aailyah was entitled to a Roman Catholic Funeral Mass (aka Rite of Christian Burial), a ceremony her family obviously opted for at her tragic and untimely departure. One can only presume St. Ignatius Catholic Church was the family's parish or church community in New York. Many Roman Catholic African-American celebrities have been buried out of this church, such as the late great Lena Horne, etc.

A funeral toll is also called a knell. A funeral toll is the slow ringing of the church bell using the hammer rope (as opposed to the pealing rope that actually swings the bell) as the deceased is carried out of the church. In many places, there is usually a series of quick rings to indicate the gender of the decedent (for example, three for a man, two for a woman), followed by a pause, then one ring for each year of the decedent's life, spaced approximately 10 seconds apart. Listening, one can tell a funeral toll by its slow "bong . . . bong," as opposed to the faster, more joyous "ding-dong" when the bell is pealed.

Is not correct. A black armband should be worn on your left arm. The reason for this is that the armband represents the deceased and by wearing the armband you are wanting to keep the deceased close to your heart. Your left arm is the one closer to your heart.

In the inustey it's called a sneezeguard. It is meant to protect the deceased from viewers who might try to take something as a "keepsake." I believe it became popular around the time that saint were canonized before their deaths; it was believed that parts of their bodies held holy powers.

There are alas, many morbid songs dealing with funerals-I am not referring to instrumental funeral marches- that is not strictly speaking a song. - some songs making such references would be Light my Fire ( Funeral pyre is in the lyrics), there is a song entitled Open Casket ( of all things!) There are songs entitled both Black Sabbath- could have funerary overtones- or also Devil Worship and White Room is the slang term for the morgue. in the song a man accidentally encounters a funeral party at a railroad station, and this explains the ( restless Diesels) in the song. I came into, such a sad time, at the station.. and so on. Paint It Black , by the Rolling stones is another mournful song, and oddly would make an apprpriate mortuary song for Natalie Wood! It is very rare that the word funeral, or related terms- casket, coffin, hearse, make it into the record label, though I have given some examples.

First practical Hydroplane ( do not confuse with motorboat of same name) was designed by Glenn Curtiss, well-known aircraft pioneer. Curtiss also favored an unusual type of mid-wing ( say on biplanes) ailerons which were officially referred to as Interplane Field Struts. Bow-on, they gave the Biplane the appearance of a Triplane. these are control surfaces-- not actual wings. This set-up did not survive the tests of World War I and was not used after the War.
