Georgia (Eurasian Country)

Georgia, as a modern independent state, declared its independence from the Soviet Union on April 9, 1991. However, its historical roots trace back to ancient kingdoms, such as Colchis and Iberia, which existed over 2,000 years ago. The country's long history includes various periods of independence and foreign rule before establishing its current sovereignty.

The Holiday Inn Ajara (Adjara) Hotel and Business Complex is currently the tallest building in Tbilisi.

The Greater Caucasus mountain range separates Russia from Georgia and Azerbaijan. Its peaks reach heights of over 5,000 meters and it spans approximately 1,100 kilometers from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea.

In the Georgian era, there was a huge tax on windows. This was because England needed money for war and it was an easy way for the English government to get the money. Because of having to pay the tax, the number of windows you had would be a sign of wealth etc. Poor people sometimes only had one window on each floor. Some more people even had to brick up windows to try and avoid paying any extra tax. One main draw back for the lower class was that blocking out the windows stopped light getting in, and if there was no natural light then they were going to have to pay more money for lighting anyway. Was there really a point to this? Did they really save any money by blocking out their windows, paying less tax and paying more money for lighting?

Georgia is not a part of Russia, it is an independent country situated in the Caucasus, bordering Russia (the two states have been at war in 2008). Note, however, that until 1991, both Russia and Georgia were part of a common state, the Union of Soviet and Socialist Republics (USSR).

As a result of the 2008 War between Georgia and South Ossetia, South Ossetian affairs are heavily influenced by Russia to the point where South Ossetia has effectively become a Russian colony. (It is the same way that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is effectively a Turkish colony.)
