GIMP

The dialogs in GIMP are windows that contain tools and options that you can use to change your image. All dialogs can be found by going to windows > dockable dialogs. The layers dialog, for example, allows you to view all of the layers in one box and enables you to change the mode and capacity of each layer, along with other options.

If you can't drop them into the trash bin,

it's always possible to go into the directory where brushes are stored abd delete those files you don't want - but brushes don't take up a lot of space so why bother?

To smooth out skin, use the smudge tool. It's the hand icon near the bottom of the icons in the tool box. Select a circle brush, preferably one of the blurry ones, and change the rate to 20 or less. Then go to your picture, click and run the brush over the skin to smooth it out.

To change the lighting, go to colors >brightness/contrast and adjust the levels to your liking. The image should change as you change the settings. When you're happy with the results, click 'ok'.

less userfriendly than photoshop but when u get used to it its fine

There are many ways to do this. If the background of the image you want to extract is roughly all one color, use the Fuzzy Select tool and put the threshold at just high enough to select everything but the image you want to extract. Then delete that selection. If the background is something different, then you can erase around the image you want to extract, using a smaller and smaller brush for the more detailed parts. This is the most time-consuming and most accurate way to extract the image, I suggest this method if you're in no hurry to get it done. :)

Save the pattern you want as a .PAT file and add it into the Patterns folder

Potter Puppet Pals aren't found on GIMP, they are made there.

Using Crop tool you can crop image and increase resolution. Activate Crop Tool then type dimensions and resolution in tools options bar (just below menus) in Width, Height and Resolution fields then drag over image with Crop Tool to select area and confirm on check mark in tools options bar or by pressing Enter/Return. In Photoshop CS6 after activating Crop Tool click on Unconstrained on the right side of Crop Tool icon in tools options bar and choose Size and Resolution. In Crop Image Size & Resolution dialog type dimensions and Resolution or just type Resolution, confirm on OK then use Crop Tool.

Gimp can open a .PSD file directly, and save it out as it's native format - the .XCF

You have to use the same layer to dodge or burn. It won't work if you use it on a new layer.

I assume you have two pictures open - one of them of you.

"Select" yourself (use any select tool).

Copy it (under edit)

Paste selection onto the second picture.

Move it to where you want it.

You open a new document, then you make a new layer on top of the background. Put the first frame of your animation on this new layer. After you have completed the first frame of your animation, uncheck the little eye to make this layer invisible, and create another layer. Make the second frame of your animation on this new layer. Keep going until you have all the frames you want, and then go to filters-animation-playback to view your animation.

NOTE: If you want to change how long each frame is displayed, then right click on the layer you want to change the time of, click 'edit layer attributes' and put in brackets the amount of time you want the frame to be displayed for. For example, pretend my first frame was just titled 'Frame one.' I would change the name to 'Frame one (1000ms)' Remember to put your time in miliseconds, not seconds!

GIMP has been an incredible tool for me. I do freelance graphic design and I have found that GIMP sometimes fills in where even Adobe Photoshop can't!

The price alone rockets it to #1 in my book, but because it is available free for download, there is even more peer-to-peer support, download-able effects, scripts, brushes, patterns and loads of web tutorials. It's a community of people helping each other out in a way that I have found does not exist in the Photoshop community.

I have learned so much from my peers, including ways in which GIMP both matches and surpasses Photoshop.

I would say that you should absolutely give it a shot. After all, what have you got to lose?

As a side note, I think Photoshop works better for photo manipulation, but GIMP does a fantastic job of graphic creation and generation. It also holds its own when it comes to photo editing. For the price, however, the slight disadvantages in photo manipulation are well worth it.

Good luck! Oh, and stick with it. You may not warm up to it at first, but it will grow on you.

Get the Ubuntu (linux) version. If you install ubuntu it comes with it.

Well, first you have to make the non-transparent image transparent. go to colors>color to alpha the select the background (you can use the color picker tool by clicking the white bar and then the eye-dropper icon to the right of the HTML notation box) color of the non-transparent image. after you pres OK, the background color will change to transparency and you'll be able to see the layer beneath.

if your making a box, take the four pieces that are left-over and tie a knot on each one

In the "Layers, Channels, etc" window, right click on a layer and click delete.

Actuall you don't add fonts to GIMP but you can add fonts to your computer to be used on GIMP.So download a font from a site like:

Dafont.com

Then Download the font to

Computer>Local Disc>Windows>Fonts

Then Next time you open GIMP you should have the fonts the Typing button.
