The gauge may have gone bad, the oil pressure sending unit may have gone bad, the oil pump may have quit. I suggest you find the oil pressure line coming off engine, put another oil pressure gauge on it and then just crank the engien to see if you get any oil pressure whatsoever. If you don't, then I would check the oil pressure sending unit next before I tore the oil pan off to examine the oil pump itself. Whatever you do, do not run the engine with zero oil pressure otherwise you will seize up the engine and that will cost big bucks to repair.

This is a very easy thing to check. Under the hood on the left side (drivers side) near the rear of the engine bay. You will see, a small rectangle box (fluid reservoir) attached to a circle (master cylinder). Make sure the truck is turned off. On the fluid reservoir, lift the cover off. It should attach on four places, like small tabs. In side you will see a rubber boot that should stay with the cover. The fluid has two small 'holds', forward and rear respectively. There are fill level lines on the side of the reservoir. Fill them up to the line, don't over fill. Place the cover with the boot back on, ensuring it seats fully.

Slide in under the truck behind the drivers door and look up in the frame and you will see it.

The arm is held on by a c-clip on the steel post that serves as the hinge and mounting point to the side of the seat. Simply stated, you pop that clip off and pull the armrest out, then slide the new one in and replace the clip. This sounds much easier than it is. In order to get to the c-clip you have to partially remove the seat cover. Reach up under the back of the seat and disconnect the plastic clip that holds the seat cover together at the bottom. Then you have to peel back the cover (mine's leather - a real challenge) until you can jam your hand up far enough to find the c-clip. Don't be afraid to really yank on the leather or fabric...it's tough. An upholsterer could probably do this in 15 minutes. It took me an hour and I was hot and tired when it was done. Good luck!

The Suburban 2500 is a large, full-sized SUV capable of towing large payloads. With this ability comes a dependency on an efficient cooling system. The weakest point of the cooling system is the mechanical thermostat located inside of the intake manifold. When the engine is under stress, it forces the thermostat to work in a manner that is stressful for the spring inside the thermostat. When the spring in the thermostat fails the Suburban overheats and then the thermostat must be replaced.

The engine must be cool. Loosen the radiator cap to relieve any pressure in the cooling system. Trace the upper radiator hose from the radiator to where the hose connects to the engine. The metal part that the hose connects to is the thermostat intake housing.

Step 2 of 8

Remove the hose from the thermostat intake housing by loosening the retaining band that secures the hose. To do this, pinch the two clips that protrude from the band together with pliers. This loosens the pressure on the hose. With the clips pinched together, pull the hose off the housing. If the hose has a screw-type hose clamp, simply unscrew the knuckle until the clamp is loose enough to slide it down the hose and out of the way. With the hose loose, lift the loose end into the air to drain any fluid in the hose into the radiator.

Remove the two bolts that hold the thermostat onto the intake manifold with a wrench. Turn the bolts counterclockwise to remove them. Lift the thermostat intake housing off the intake manifold. You may have to pry it loose with the screwdriver.

Remove the thermostat by lifting it out of the intake manifold and replace it with the new thermostat. Place the end with the spring on it into the intake manifold. This ensures proper orientation.

Lift the old thermostat gasket off the machined surface of the intake manifold and put the new one in place. If the gasket doesn't come off in one piece, scrape both mating surfaces with a scraper or flat-bladed screwdriver until both surfaces are clean.

Place the thermostat intake housing back on to the intake manifold and bolt it down using the existing bolts.

Step 7 of 8

Pinch the tabs of the radiator hose band and slide the hose back onto the thermostat intake housing. Release the tabs to secure the hose into place.

Top the radiator off with coolant. After running the engine to operating temperature and letting it cool again, check the coolant level again--more may be needed to replace the air that has worked its way out of the system.

The 1986 Chevrolet Suburan came with two engines. The 5.0L - V8 and the 5.7L - V8. Very hard to tell these engines apart. If you will look under the hood you will see a placard somewhere on the radiator mounting bracket or under the hood itself, with the engine size listed. Also listed there will be some other inforamtion like Spark Plug gap.

Ah! I found it. It's inside the frame rail behind the driver seat. (Underneath the vehicle of course.) You may have to take the support bracket (further forward) to give enough play to release the fuel lines from the old filter and replace the new one into the container that holds it and bolts to the frame as well. I bought mine at Advance auto Parts and it cost me 9.95 & tax.

If this is an 80's model, it should be rather simple. The starter will be underneath the passenger side. After you find it, just remove the cables to it and the two bolts securing it to the block and it should slide out towards the rear of the car.
