It caused President Johnson to give up his office and for a brief moment the military was in a position to run the war on its own terms without micro management from the White House. President Nixon was a disapointment to the Pentagon Brass. The war was ended, but on less than perfect terms for the military or the US.

Did America win the Vietnam war?

Yes.

Principally because the US Military and Government misunderstood the wider implications of pan-Indochinese communism and assumed that the South Vietnamese population could be convinced to resist this trend. They ignored the fact that the vast majority of South Vietnamese were already sympathetic to the cause of pan-Indochinese communism and that many were actively involved in bringing it about. This failure led to the belief that a limited war in South Vietnam was a winnable proposition.

Note that despite US Military intervention ALL of Indochina did in fact become communist.

What impact has the Vietnam War had on Australian culture?

The Australian government felt obligated to help out these refugees, and there was general support from the public, so when the refugees got here, most policies changed and Australia became a multicultural society. As a result of Australians' involvement in the Vietnam war we found that we had an obligation to the people that were made homeless as a result. These people were of Asian descent, which was a major shock to the system. Before the Vietnam war the only people you saw of Asian descent were the Chinese restaurant owners and small farmers. This was because Australia's official policy excluded Asians and people with designated colour "character" from Australia as they were considered undesirable to the wellbeing of Australia as a nation. A big impact was that it spelt the final death knell of the white Australia policy and put an end to our isolation in the area. We also enjoy a far more varied diet as a result, not to mention that you can now get fresh bread 7 days a week, even from the Australian bakers.

Are you more likely to be selected for Delta Force as a ranger or a Green Beret?

More likely to be asked to try out for Selection, yes, but still very small chances of making it in. Each year, Delta goes over Army records for the best Green Berets and Rangers, and ask them to try out for Delta Selection. Only the top 0.1% of those asked will actually make it through and be accepted. You have a much higher probability of making it into the NFL or NBA than making it into Delta Force. After a candidate is admitted into the unit, they then undergo years of more specialized and rigorous training. If you're a regular Army soldier, you may be asked to try out for Delta Selection, but you really have to be an extraordinary standout for them to notice you. You can't just sign up somewhere, they ask you; and they're mostly looking and Green Berets and Rangers because they know that they are the best.

What do you have to do to become a green beret?

The process of becoming a Special Forces soldier is a lengthy one. The following is a condensed answer. A soldier must first be selected to train. This is done during the first phase of training known as Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS).

If a soldier is selected he chooses a language to learn and a specialty. The specialties are; Explosives and Engineering, Weapons, Communication, or Medicine.

After completing language training he must then attend and complete the 7 week Small Unit Tactics (SUT) course. Once complete the soldier then must attend and complete the 3 week Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) course. Upon completion he begins training in his specialty (56 weeks for Medics and 13 weeks for the other three specialties). Finally future Special Forces soldiers must complete the 30 day culmination exercise known as Robin Sage. After completion the soldier is allowed to wear the Special Forces tab on his uniform and wear the Green Beret.

Why is the special forces beret green?

Around WW2, select US Army Rangers and OSS operatives were taken over to the UK to complete the British commando course. Upon completion, they were issued the green beret. After the war, these soldiers then went on to become the first members of the newly formed Army Special Forces. They kept the British green berets as a sign of pride, but they were not sanctioned for wear by the Army. President Kennedy saw an exhibition by them and was very impressed, officially authorizing the beret to wear by US Special Forces only. The Army then took a Canadian beret design and created new US Army green berets for the Special Forces soldiers. There's more information on this on the US Army Special Forces Wikipedia page.
