When did Presidents Choice Financial open its first pavilion?
I found this posted in customer's comments on the PCFinancial website:
"First off, I wanted to compliment PC Financial on offering such a great service! (No fees, free cheques, on-line banking, PC Points, etc.) I have been a customer since the first pavilion opened at the Amherst Superstore in August of 1998 and have since opened a RSP account, second savings, borrowing account and have a PC MasterCard. I do almost all of my banking on-line and find the web site easy to use and navigate. Thanks and keep up the good work!"
- Aaron E., Amherst, Nova Scotia I can only echo the comments by Aaron E. PC Financial has a very friendly easy-to-use website, a full range of services, excellent rates, and never have we ever paid a single cent in fees. This includes no fees for our cheque books. We get "PC Points" for paying bills online, which can be redeemed towards groceries at Superstore, or all kinds of other things at other places (swap with Petro Canada Petro Points, for example) but I like the fact you can easily redeem them for everyday necessities like groceries. And I have ALWAYS been able to get ahold of a personal representative by phone if needed. Their service has been excellent! Anyway, I digress! The answer appears to be August 1998 (unless Aaron E is simply referring to the first pavilion opened in Amherst but the possiblity still exists President's Choice opened one elsewhere even earlier?. Is there a list of Halifax 1917 injured?
I assume you are asking for people injured in the Halifax Explosion (6 December 1917) and not people injured in WWI in 1917.
There is a ledger at the Nova Scotia Archives that lists those killed (and those who died from their injuries) in the Halifax Explosion. But this does not
list people who were injured but did not die from their wounds.
I am not aware of any listing of non-fatal injuries, as it would include many thousands who suffered minor cuts or burns, many of which would not even have received medical treatment.
You can search the Remembrance Book at the Archives website: (see Related Links below)
How did Boston help in the Halifax harbor explosion in 1917?
The city of Boston and the state of Massachussetts dispatched a relief train to Halifax filled with doctors, nurses and medical supplies within about 12 hours after the explosion. Remarkably, they decided to send the train based on very little information about what was going on in Halifax at the time. (Most lines of communication were down.) Over the next several days, more trains filled with medical aid and humanitarian supplies were sent to Halifax, and Bostonians sent millions of dollars worth of supplies and financial aid. Haligonians never forgot the city's help. Some of the first emergency housing erected after the explosion was named after Massachussetts' governor, and in 1918 Halifax sent Boston a large Christmas tree as a gift. The tradition was revived in the 1970s and every Christmas the large Boston Christmas tree is a gift from the people of Nova Scotia.

Why did the Mont-Blanc enter Halifax?
The Mont Blanc was a French munitions ship, carrying a cargo of heavy explosives from New York to Bordeaux, France, for war use. Because the ship, overloaded with cargo, was slow and had only two guns for protection, it was ordered to Halifax to join a convoy of ships headed for Europe. These convoys were regularly assembled in Halifax's huge inner harbour, the Bedford Basin, during both world wars. The Mont Blanc was inbound into the Basin and passing through the narrow channel into the basin known as "The Narrows" when it collided with the outbound Norwegian ship Imo. The resulting explosion killed more than 2000 people, injured over 9000, and flattened a large section of Halifax.
Where were many of the survivors of the Halifax explosion asked to go?
There were temporary camps established around the city, most notably on the Halifax Commons, but the residents were not "asked to go" anywhere. Many homes were only temporarily uninhabitable (broken windows were most common) and were allowed to be re-used as soon as they had been inspected for structural damage.
Many residents who had friends or families in the area went to stay with them until their homes could be repaired or re-built.

How would Maine Locals get to Nova Scotia?
Most would probably drive, using interstate 95 to the Canadian border at Woodstock, New Brunswick, then NB highway 2 to the Nova Scotia border. Alternatively, you can take Maine highway 9 from Bangor, or coastal highway 1, to the Canadian border at St. Stephen NB, then NB highway 1 via Saint John toward NS. The I95 route is longer by distance but a bit shorter time-wise.
There's also a ferry from Saint John to Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley. (There were ferries that travelled from Portland and Bar Harbor ME to Yarmouth NS but these are not currently operating. There's still hope a ME-NS ferry service will be reinstated.) There are not currently any direct flights from Maine to NS. The nearest US airport with direct flights to Halifax is Boston.
