Explain how volcanoes in Hawaii form?
The Hawaiian Islands were formed due to the presence of a hotspot below the lithosphere. These are thought to be caused by up welling plumes of high temperature material (mantle plumes). These high temperature plumes cause partial melting of the crust leading to the formation of magma which rises through the lithosphere and onto Earth's surface. However, since the Earth's lithosphere is always moving while the hotspot remains stationary, the Earth's lithosphere will move the volcanoes formed by the hotspots away from it. This results in the older volcanoes becoming extinct since the source of magma is cut off, whereas new volcanoes form above the hotspot to continue and extend the chain.
