The number of colors in a display is different to the form of the display. LED or CCFL illumination of an LCD display does not in any way impact on the number of colors that can be resolved.

Passive 3D televisions use battery free glasses and they cut the effective resolution in half, so a 1080 line display will effectively become a 540 line display.

My Blu-Ray HT-BD1220 has a problem with it's sound system in so far as the voices / sounds of the main front line actors are muffled whilst all of the background sounds are perfectly clear, any ideas as to the problem and how I might fix it?

I've been told by Sky you just have to wait. You'll have the latest version (obviously) when it downloads, so it will have been better tested for glitches than earlier versions.

Not unless you have a HD converter box and have them feed the HD programs to your HD converter.

You will either need a "dual-head" video card, or two video cards. Check that the medical monitor conforms to a PC standard - it may not. If it has a HD-15 or DVI video connector, then it should be standard - and easy to find a card that will work with it. If it has 3,4, or 5 BNC cables for video it will be much harder. In that case you need to look for a workstation graphics card - and probably something that is obsolete now. (Cheer up - that means it's cheaper!)

To use the full capabilities of this "high resolution" monitor, you may need to use a workstation graphics card even if the monitor has a standard connector. Check the refresh rate and resolution, and then compare with high-end consumer cards, and with workstation cards.

Some cards will support a very high refresh rate, but only at low resolution.

By "workstation card" I mean something like an nVidia Quadro or 3DLabs Wildcat or ATI FireGL. Note that these can cost upwards of $3000.

Go to options on the log in page and you can choose Min, Low, Mid, High, Custom and under Custom you can choose Safe mode, Software, OpenGL®, DirectX®.

Min or Low should take you out of HD but safe mode is the lowest graphics you can go on the game.

Some years ago, broadcasters began upgrading studios to HD. A studio has a typical life of 10 years, depending on the use. Over the space of a ten year period, the majority of broadcast studios will be capable of producing content in HD. As the process started, 1080i was the highest resolution and frame rate to be considered. Even now, there is very little equipment capable of handling 1080p in a live production chain. Having 1080p cameras is of no benefit to broadcasters if the vision mixer or switcher cannot use the format. Additionally, recorders, image processors, switches, cables and all other parts of the infrastructure need to be 1080p capable. The full bandwidth of 1080i is about 1.5Gb (1500 megabits per second). 1080p requires 3Gb, twice the data rate, therefore twice the storage space and twice the bandwidth for broadcast to viewers. Most broadcast manufacturers have 1080p equipment on their roadmap for the future but it will be a number of years before it will be realistic to equip broadcast facilities for 1080p. Broadcasts to homes are heavily compressed, allowing an HD channel to use as little as 5Mb of bandwidth. To use 1080p, the data rate will typically have to approach 10Mb if the improvement in quality is to be seen by the viewer. We will have to wait until production studios are equipped for 1080p, broadcasters can store 1080p and service delivery platforms (cable and satellite) can handle the additional data rate without decreasing he number of channels being delivered. None of these are likely to happen until companies can see an increase in revenue for delivering 1080p content. Indeed, many are still not committing to HD 1080i production for similar reasons - the cost of doing so is not being recouped by additional revenues. For the time being, we will have to be content with 1080p programs being available from local sources such as Bluray. Broadcast 1080p will remain no more than an ambition for a few years yet.
