In Buddhism, alms or almsgiving is the respect given by a lay Buddhist to a Buddhist monk. The monk will then pray for the giver's family or requested others. It is not charity as presumed by Western interpreters. It is closer to a symbolic connection to the spiritual and to show humbleness and respect in the presence of normal society.[1] The visible presence of monks is a stabilizing influence. The act of alms giving assists in connecting the human to the monk and what he represents. Tradition states that Abraham founded Judaism, and Moses later received the Torah from God.
The Kuzari (Rabbi Judah HaLevi, 1075-1141) states that Abraham was gifted with high intelligence; and, as Maimonides (1135-1204) describes, Abraham didn't blindly accept the ubiquitous idolatry. The whole populace had been duped, but the young Abraham contemplated the matter relentlessly, finally arriving at the conclusion that there is One God and that this should be taught to others as well. This is what is meant by his "calling out in the name of the Lord" (Genesis ch.12). As a young man, he remonstrated with passersby in public, demonstrating to them the falsehood of their idols; and our tradition tells how he was threatened and endangered by Nimrod.

He was the humblest of men and the greatest of prophets (Numbers ch.12).

Since Judaism has been around for something like 4000 years, it has been involved in a lot of historical events. There is also a lot of mythology surrounding those events. For example, the bible claims that Jews were slaves in Egypt for 400 years, but based on other historical sources that does not appear to have actually happened. Perhaps the single most momentous event in Judaism was the Holocaust in which six million Jews were murdered. Judaism has been a tremendously influential religion, giving rise to both Christianity and Islam, which are the two religions with the largest membership. Jews have often been hated and persecuted by the Christians and Muslims whose own religions are largely derived from Judaism. On the whole, the history of Judaism is very tragic.

Today Judaism is locked in a mortal struggle for control of Israel, with Muslims who also consider that to be a sacred land that their religion requires them to possess. This conflict has had many tragic consequences and there is no end in sight.
