No, oven cleaner is too harsh for the stove top finish. I have had 2 cook stoves with ceramic top and I have been told both times you could only use the cleaner they recommend but there is generic brands at the dollar stores DG brand that is cheaper.

Get some really strong disc magnets made of neodymium from mail order outlets like mutr.co.uk and place a line of them along the door seal. They will reinforce the weak door seal's magnetism.

What is the temperature of a kitchen fridge?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The ideal refrigerator temperature range is 1°-4.5°C (34°-40°F) . Bacterial and mold growth are considerably slowed down at these temperatures, thus retarding food spoilage. Since water freezes at 0°C (32°F), this prevents fresh foods from freezing, although when the temperature is at the low end of the range, some areas in the refrigerator may be below the freezing point.

What is an alcohol lamp how is it used?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

An alcohol lamp is a small jar with a special lid that holds a round cotton wick. Most are provided with another lid that fits over the wick to extinguish it and prevent evaporation of the alcohol fuel when not in use. Alcohol inside the jar is drawn up the wick by capillary action and evaporates when it reaches the air. The fumes are ignited, and burn with a temperature of between 500 and 900 degrees F., depending on the location in the flame. Alcohol lamps are normally used when low heat is needed for projects such as woodworking, lab experiments or heating something for a science project.

What should not go in the garbage disposal?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hi Larry

I am assuming you are talking about a garburator.

You don't really need a list. Things like potato, carrot peelings, small pieces off your dinner plate (not bones) coffee grounds, tea bags are all things your garbage disposal will take. This old stand-by is right on ... "When it doubt, throw it out."

AnswerWell, you arent supposed to put coffee grounds in the disposer either. AnswerAvoid putting egg Shells, corn husk, asparagus, and other fibrous fruits and vegetables. AnswerDon't put hamburger or bacon grease or eggshells or potato skins either! Answerpotato peels or large amounts of potatos should not be put into the garbage disposal. I know this from first hand experience. AnswerConsider running ice cubes in the unit as a means of 'cleaning' the unit. The hard ice chips help knock down the scum layers that build up below the seal, and in the grinder wheel. AnswerToo much of anything is not good. Small amounts of potatoe peels might be okay, but if you put alot, you're asking for a repair bill.

This appliance diverts a lot of what could be composted to the sewer system. And you're paying for water to wash it down the drain. Some cities have banned these in new construction. As little as possible is a good list.

Why won't my Kenmore model 665 drain after the cycle is complete?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is probably plugged up with dirt or grime. I had a case where my drain tube/pipe was plugged up. After I disconnected it, it emptied out, and after I reconnected it, it worked fine. I also found stuff inside on the bottom that I cleaned out.

A kettle, sometimes called teakettle, tea kettle or the pot, is a small kitchen appliance used for boiling water in preparation for making tea or other beverages requiring hot water. Depending on culture and historical location, the word kettle can also have a variety of other meanings[citation needed].

Stovetop kettlesThe Salvation Army uses soup kettles to collect charitable donations.

In the United States, '"kettle" usually refers to a teakettle, a roughly pitcher shaped metal (or ceramic) vessel used to heat water on a stovetop or hob. Kettles usually have a handle on top, a spout, and a lid. Sometimes stove-mounted kettles also have a steam whistle that indicates when the water has reached boiling point. Kettles often resemble teapots, but are used to boil water, not to brew tea.

Elsewhere in the world (and sometimes in the United States) the word kettle can also refer to a soup kettle, a metal pot for boiling or stewing, resembling a small cauldron.

Electric kettlesElectric water kettle designed by Peter Behrens for AEG in 1909.

In Western and Central Europe, especially the United Kingdom and Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, a kettle is an electrical device used to quickly heat water for hot drinks, such as tea or coffee. It is normally constructed out of durable plastic or steel (with a plastic handle) and powered by mains electricity. In modern designs once the water has reached boiling, the kettle automatically deactivates to prevent the water boiling away and damaging the heating element.

Corded kettles generally use detachable IEC C15 and C16 connections.

"Cordless" kettles, sometimes called "jettles", became popular in the late 1980s and 1990s. These kettles consist of a plastic base that connects to the mains outlet and a separate kettle. They both have electrical contacts that connect to supply power to the kettle when it is placed on top of the base, and the kettle can be easily detached to allow movement to the sink and elsewhere.

Similar to the electric kettle is the electric water boiler, a vacuum flask with a heating element that boils water and maintains it at a constant temperature. These are particularly popular in East Asia, as well as in Israel, where they are used during the Jewish Sabbath, the day of rest.

The word kettle originates from Latin catillus, which in various contexts is translated as bowl, deep dish, or funnel. a kettle is probably the most ancient kind of metal cooking utensil.[citation needed] Common materials were wrought iron and pressed steel plate.true

Development of the Electric Kettle1880: During the period of the 1880s to the 1920s, people used cast iron kettles to heat water for hot beverages like tea & coffee. Cast iron kettles were cast from a mould and showed good thermal qualities. These kettles were heated on top of a stove.

1920s: During this period, of the 1920s-1930s people used kerosene kettles. These kettles were popular, as a stove was no longer needed to heat up water. Also this meant that people had no need to heat up the entire stove just for a cup of tea, plus less thermal energy was required to heat up the water. But there was a bad side to this kettle; there would be more fumes in the house, from the kerosene.

1938: In Australia chrome-plated steel kettles were popular in city areas, as they ran on electricity. Electricity in the country at the time was rare. These kettles had no exposed coil, but rather one under a flat bottom inside the kettle. This kettle had some safety features like an overload cut out switch. The cord was cotton insulated, which was safe, when new. As it became worn it would expose the coil and electrocutions would occur. The plug was a Bakelite plug.

1949: In 1949 ceramic kettles, which ran on electricity, were first released. They made it more efficient to boil water. These kettles were also called jugs as they resembled a jug shape. These kettles also have a cotton-insulated cord like its 1938 counterpart.

1950s-1970s: During this time the development of the ceramic jug continued. The kettles started to show more safety features like whistles and cut out features. They typically had Bakelite handles and their operations and aesthetics were improved. During this time it was still possible to buy stovetop ovens.

1980s: During this period polymer body kettles were first released. Some features of this new kettle's materials were, they were more durable and were poor conductors of heat. These jugs new materials made them cheaper to produce on a mass production scale. These kettles also had safety features like whistles, cutout switches & had windows in the side to see how much water was in the kettle meaning never having to lift the lid off. Also the cord insulation was made of plastic, meaning wear on the cords no longer exposed wire.

1990s: In this period of time kettles were improved by having a base, which allowed the jug to swivel and be detached. This meant water could be poured farther away from the plug meaning less chance of electrocution.

2000s: During this period kettles took a new turn, being made out of metal that heated & cooled better and a polymer handle, which didn't conduct heat. The metal used was stainless steel & these kettles featured a cut out switch, which stopped heating the kettle after the waters boiled. It also had a cut out switch on the base so when the kettle was put on the back on the base, it wouldn't start boiling again. Also, it cut out power supply if lifted off the base, making it safer.

How to defrost a freezer?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Blowdryer, but you are at risk of electric shock and melting the plastic insides of the freezer.

A far safer option is a desk fan. No exposed electrics, no risk of melting plastic parts, and a far hither air flow makes a 12" desk fan far faster then a standard hair dryer as well.

Place the fan on a stand of some sort (chair, etc) blowing into the freezer at full power.

45 mins, job done.

Why does dishwasher stink?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The simple answer is bacteria caused from rotting food particles trapped in the drain and parts inside the dishwasher itself. There are dozens of cleaners on the market now that will clean and sanitize your dishwasher. Most simply require you to place the cleaner inside the dishwasher and run a cycle.

In a pinch- add a 1/4 cup of regular bleach to the detergent port and run a "scour" or heavy cycle. Might take a couple of cycles but you should see-and smell- an immediate difference.

Another possible problem is that the unit may be leaking and mold has began to grow around the leak. This requires the unit be pulled-leak repaired- and the mold cleaned up. A spray bottle with about 16ounces of water- 4ounces of bleach and 2 ounces or hydrogen peroxide works well on killing the mold and preventing it's return.

How do freezers freeze things?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Freezers freeze things by a giant fan on the inside of the freezer, blowing air around 32 degrees F. The air circulates in the freezer and the 32 degrees F freezes the stuff. 32 degrees F is the least temperature you need to freeze things.

Why do carrots start to freeze in the fridge?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Your refrigerator thermostat is set too low. Put a thermometer in your refrigerator and check that the thermostat is working. If you have a dial type, set it in the middle...either 3 or 5 depending on the calebration of your model. The temperature in your crisper should be about 45-50 degrees. That's the reason it's at the lowest point in your refrigerator. Another reason might be that you don't have enough stuff in the fridge. It is a fact that the unit will work more efficiently if it has more in it. Use water as a space filler.

How can wash a duvet in washing machine at home?

I don't wash my douvet. I put it in the dryer in a Dryel bag and clean it that way. Mine is Down. With Down Alternative, you should be able to wash it in cold water in your washer. Then partially dry it on "air", then hang it to dry the rest of the way. Do not do this with Feather comforters.

Why is it important to adjust the shelves to the correct position before lighting an oven?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is important to adjust the shelves to the correct position before lighting the oven because it is safer to do so whilst the oven is cold and doing that, you would not put yourself at that much risk of getting burnt as when you are adjusting the shelves whilst the oven is hot. Whether you are doing this whilst the oven is cold or hot, still wear oven gloves!

It really is common sense because if you needed to adjust the shelves but you already turned the oven on and you could feel the heat and knew the oven was really hot, you wouldn't put your hand in there to adjust the shelves anyway.

Why is the gas stove important today?

Many cooks like the immediate change in heat available with gas. There is little or no lag between turning the knob and being able to cook. It is less likely to create hot spots.
