1. Buy spray on deodorant

2. Spray your nails, try not to get to much on your skin

3. Let the deodorant soak there for a little bit (1-2 mins)

4. Take a napkin or hanker chief and rub your nails with it

5. It may not all come off good enough for you, if not repeat steps 2-4

Your basement is moldy because it's humid and it's humid because it's not properly water proofed or there is a significant internal source of humidity (like if you are running a hydroponic farm for example). If these paintings are valuable to you, don't even try to repair them ! Older paintings may be painted with paint that modern materials will mar or disfigure. I'd advise taking them to an art or antique store and getting their advice. A few Years ago my daughter found 2 old paintings in the attic of a house she was renovating and decided to clean them up. She was an amateur artist and thought it was simple ,but soon realised she had problems.
