First of all there is a lot of pollution and damage done when the raw materials are produced that make up the car. then as the car gets used it produces further pollutants from the engines and engine wear, not to mention noise, danger to pedestrians and animals. ongoing need for replacement parts and the disposal of the old materials and finally the need for the disposal of the whole unit as it becomes uneconomical to the owner to use.

The lack of a place to plug in an electric car battery, for people who live in apartment buildings, or those who drive farther than a round trip to their home and garage (with outlet), is one of the big problems with electric cars. Unless there are places to plug in an electric car and recharge the batteries (much like the gas stations found throughout the world), electric cars will not have much of an impact. There needs to be a great many recharging places built, where people who buy an electric car can recharge their car's batteries, or the electric car will never be a big seller. Very few, if any, hybrid cars receive a charge from braking. The charge comes from the engine when it is running or a power outlet at home. Because of this this they are no more efficient, overall, than a standard car. They cost more and as is stated above the disposal of the batteries is expensive, as is replacing them.

Hybrids are better for the environment. They save oil and they save the environment tons of greenhouse gas. I guess they were invented for people who wanted a cleaner Earth.

They are more of a sales gimmick then a product that us pro environment. There is a great deal of extra energy and really nasty chemicals that go into the making of a hybrid that are not used as extensively in a conventional auto.

The mileage is slightly better and safety is not that much lower. They definitely make people "feel" better. Many people that buy hybrids enjoy that feeling.

While environmentally they are probably slightly worse then a conventional auto of the same size they do save a small amount of fuel. That savings does equate to a slight reduction in foreign oil use.

The first answerer here has a great name for environmentally friendly autos. Get a minicooper. They are MUCH better for the environment then any Hybrid!
