Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee is a full-size SUV vehicle that came in two versions: the SJ model (1974 to 1983) and the XJ model (1984 to 2001). The chassis was based on the Jeep Wagoneer but had a 6.6-liter engine.

How do you change a distributor in a Cherokee?

I assume this is a distibutor in a 4.0L Cherokee. It is rather simple and much like changing any other vehicle's distributor but here are directions for the 4.0L. If the distributor is still on the engine: Removal - Disconnect the battery negative cable. - On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove the electrical cooling fan and shroud assembly from the radiator to allow room to rotate the engine with a socket and ratchet using the vibration damper bolt. - Scribe a mark on the distributor housing below the left side (past) the number one spark plug wire post of the distributor cap for reassembly reference for No 1 cylinder firing position. - Remove the distributor cap. - Turn the engine in a clockwise direction until the rotor is approaching the scribed mark on the distributor housing. Then slowly turn the engine until the timing mark on the crankshaft vibration damper lines up with zero on the front cover timing scale. P.S. The timing mark is located on the edge of the vibration damper closest to the front cover. - Align the trailing edge of the rotor blade with the mark previously scribed on the distributor housing. - Remove the retaining bolt and clamp and remove the distributor. Install - If needed, use a flat blade screwdriver to turn the oil pump gear shaft until the slot is slightly past the 11 o

Why is my Jeep Cherokee accelerating after starting?

it sounds like the throttle pulley might need lubing. find the cable and assembly that moves when you press the gas and get some WD-40 to it.

if that doesn't fix it, hopefully someone else will chime in.

Where is the backup light switch located on a 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport?

Look on the transmission, passengers side, about half of the way up.

It is a fan shaped switch with a big nut at the bottom.

The cost about $300 new so I suggest cleaning yours first.

Remove the adjusting bolt at the top of the switch, and the wire connector, then hold the bolt still while you remove the large nut at the bottom, the bolt is connected to the gear shift and can be broken if it is moved against it's will.

take the switch to a bench and remove the screws in the back, then separate the halfs, clean out the nasty grease inside, pay special attention to the sweeper arm with the two brass contacts, they have little springs under them and they often get stuck down, remove the two contacts and springs and clean it all out really well, reassemble with new di-electric grease and reinstall on your Jeep.

Have someone move the selector to R and check to see if the back up lights are on, if so hold in place and have them move it to park and try to start, if it does then lock it down by tightening the top bolt.

If not then rotate the switch until the lights come on, and perform the park procedure to ensure the switch is aligned.

$300 !? I bought my switch for $73.10 at NAPA and installed it myself. Follow the excellent instructions above for finding it and disconnecting the old one. Hope this info is helpful.

Where is the rear wiper motor on a 1994 Jeep Cherokee Country?

It is located inside the tailgate - you will have to remove the trim panel. Be careful not to break the tabs which hold the "Christmas tree" retainers to the panel!

You will also have to remove the rear wiper arm. In order to do that, you will have to lift the arm, put a small screwdriver under the little retaining spring that holds the arm to the wiper motor shaft.

Once the wiper arm is removed, you will have to remove the large, narrow nut that holds the trim piece (where the washer hose passes through the tailgate) in place.

While you're there, you may want to replace the trim ring, as they often become brittle with age, and the nipple which the washer hose attaches to will break. Many Jeep dealers still stock this item, and it goes for less than $10. Don't be surprised if your old one is gray and the new one is black!

Once you get those items removed, you will have to unplug the old motor and then remove four 10mm bolts from a bracket which holds the motor to the tailgate.

How many hours it takes to change a fuel pump on a 92 jeep Cherokee?

About 30 minutes. The fuel pump on the Cherokee is on the front side of the tank, instead of on the top like most cars, thus allowing you to remove it without lowering the gas tank! There is a locking ring that holds it all in and can be removed by using a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to carefully tap the ring counter clockwise till it comes off. Then just pull out the pump, and replace. Be careful not to bend the float installing the new one or your gauge won't read right.

What is the best lift kit for a jeep gran Cherokee?

Wiki is not here to endorse products. The best lift kit is the one that you can afford and that does what it's supposed to do for you. There are many retailers both on and off line that can provide you excellent information, products and perhaps installation.

Where is the fuel filter on a 1990 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L engine 6-cylinder 2-wheel?

What might be the problem if your 1993 Jeep Cherokee won't start?

It could be your fuseable like if... If you have lost all power and your battery is fine you can try two things: one you can turn the ignition switch and them your transmission to neutral possition and try starting it then. if this works nothing is wrong with your transmission just a chip or wiering in it the cuts power to start. the other thing is to shake the cable that runs from the battery to the starter that might work. If you hear a click and hum, but no turning of the engine, then that's the starter. Knock on it lightly with a wrench (look for two large can-like things mounted next to each other under the Jeep, just in front of the passenger set.) This will work for now, but it should be replaced.

Why would a Jeep Cherokee have a high pitched whining sound while driving but stops when you push on the brakes?

"vacuum leak in the brake booster"

I agree. Ive just gotten this issue in my 94 cherokee-- the most reliable car ive owned. While i havent located it, I can agree with this post, because that is the vicinity it seems to occur from. The 'whir' dampens once i accelerate, and Iwasglad to see some sort of confirmation it was the brake booster.

What is the cost to fix this? Is it worth it? Or can I do a DIY tightening of something, or replace some tubing?

How do you shift into 4 wheel drive on a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo?

OK, So far I have found this information in my vehicle owners manual. There are illustrations which help explain what to do exactly. I am unsure if your transmission is manual or automatic. I recommend locating an owners manual for your vehicle to verify the correct way to engage 4 wheel drive for your specific vehicle or find a local mechanic to assist you in learning the proper technique. I would not want to mis-inform you.
