What is the difference between 242 transfer case and a 231 transfer case?
the 242 has full time four wheel drive made possible by a center differential while the 231 only has part time four wheel drive and no center diff.

Replace the windshield washer pump 99 Jeep Cherokee Sport?
Access the pump through the left front wheel well. Remove the plastic dust guard above the front driver's side wheel. It is attached with plastic push on fasteners (it pulls off) and you can then see the reservoir and motors. Remove the filler tube and cap under the hood by pulling it straight out of the reservoir. It is only held in place by a rubber grommet. Then remove the washer reservoir. It is easily removed with 2 screws from the side under the hood. Unplug the 2 connectors and the reservoir will now fall out in your hands. The front and rear pump motors are now easy to replace, they also are just pressed into the reservoir with rubber grommets. The front and rear pump motors are the same, but the connectors are different. The new replacement pump should include an adaptor for the electrical connection so it can be used for either the front or rear pump motor.
MORE NOTES: When you get your parts buy ~9 of the plastic clips ($4 for a package) to hold the fender (as the old ones will probably get ruined when you remove them). Also I would buy 2 pumps since they only cost around $12 and as long as you are doing all the work to get to the pump you might as well replace both. On my 2000 Cherokee the pump that was higher up on the washer fluid reservoir was for REAR wipers and the lower pump was for the FRONT wipers. I removed all the black plastic clips holding the inner fender but didn't remove the whole inner fender (just pushed the front of the inner fender toward the engine and tuck it out of the way behind the tire) .... ALSO I had to push really hard to get the inner fender to move (turns out there were some screws/studs from the edge of the metal fender and through the inner fender and they had push on metal clips that were holding it in place so would be easier to remove these first) ... I was able to replace the pump with the washer fluid bottle still mounted in the fender (your new pump should include a new rubber washer/gasket) .... I am no mechanic and the whole job only took me 1 and 1/4 hours ... the local dealer wanted $235 to do this.

How do you change a power steering belt on a 2001 jeep Cherokee the belt broke?
Power steering and everything else on the Cherokee is controlled by a single serpentine belt. On the XJ (non-Grand Cherokee) the belt has a tensioner pully located under the power steering pump. The bolt on the pully must be loosened and then the long adjuster bolt (found on a 45-degree angle towards the middle of the engine) can be easily turned to move the pully and allow for slack to put on a new belt. The belt can only go one way, must touch all pullies. smoth side to smoth pullies and groved side to goroved pullies.

How do you engage 4 wheel drive on 1988 jeep Cherokee?
the best way i have found to engage the 4x4 mode is to be rolling at about 5 to 10 mph because this takes the the tension off the transfer case and the shifting link that runs to the transfer case this makes for an easy transition from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive this will make your shift link last longer and extend the life of your transfer case if u don't do this and shift to 4 wheel while sitting still u might notice that its a little more stiffer to do this stiffness will cause your shift link to get sloppy and cause problems later in life such as not being able to shift to 4 low or even to neural or even in real bad cases full time i wouldn't recommend shifting at fast speeds cause the transfer case gears spin at very high rpm or revolutions per minute if something happens to bind up because of lack of maintenance this could result in some serious damage to the cases to take it out just push the lever to 2 wheel and be shore to back up in reverse about 20 feet or so u should here a soft click noise that's how u know its disengaged i hope this helps and in joy your Cherokee and safe wheeling
