I purchased a '93 1 week ago with this result. The engine would start and run for appx. 2 seconds and die. When I would hook up the battery, the alarm system would go off. How do i fix a broken blend door in a Cherokee?
The most common cause of your symptoms is blend-door failure. This is a design flaw created by Chrysler engineers. Basically what happens is that every 20 times the vehicle is started, the A/C system software tells the blend doors to recalibrate to ensure that the airflow is as accurate as possible. The problem is that the stop point is made of cheap plastic. The stop point connected to the actuator breaks. Shortly thereafter, the blend doors break because they cannot withstand the pressure of the actuator pushing them beyont their limits after the stop point has been broken. Passenger side is typically affected first, followed by the driver side. If the doors fall with gravity into the down position, you will maintian A/C. If you hit a bump on the road and they fall into a mixed position, you will have neutral temperature. Either way, no heat is a symptom because that is the up position for Jeep Grand Cherokees (99-2004).
I have tried this product, the Blen-Dor repair kit which will replace the plastic drive connector piece and the plastic blend doors with solid aircraft quality aluminum parts. Aluminum was chosen because it will be close to the weight of the original parts. The blend door shaft is a ½" solid piece of aluminum rod machined to fit. The two doors are aluminum sheet stock tig welded onto the door axle shaft with a foam covering applied to both sides of the door panels, all to make a one piece assembly. The second piece is the drive connector it is a ½" solid piece of aluminum rod with steel pins. The drive connector is machined to fit the actuator motor and to fit onto the end of blend door axle shaft assembly.

How much slack should a serpentine belt for a 1996 jeep Cherokee have?
You need to measure the slack before determining if it is too tight or loose. To do this place a straight edge on the power steering pump pulley and the one to left of it, press down on the belt with a couple of fingers and use a measuring tape to measure the deflection from the straight edge. If the belt is too loose you will be able to press it quite a bit. If it is just right you will be able to measure about a 1/2 to 1/4 inch deflection. Too loose the belt will usually slip and squeal loudly

How do you refit the serpentine belt on 1997 Jeep Cherokee 4.0?
I just changed a serpentine belt on my '97 Cherokee 4.0 you need to loosen the 2 top mount bolts (I think they're 13mm) on the power steering pump and loosen the 15mm bolt in the middle of the idler pulley. Then loosen the tensioning bolt on the lower side of the power steering pump Lower (left hand side facing pump from the front) follow the diagram to route the new belt( should be on a decal under the hood) replace belt then tighten using the tensioning bolt on lower side of the power steering pump to get 1/4" to 1/2" of deflection between puleys (when you press down on the belt) then tighten the bolts on top of the power steering pump And don't forget to tighten the idler puley bolt in the center of the puley. Run engine for 3 to 5 minutes to seat the belt. then recheck the belt tension. Caution! be sure to route new belt propperly or you could run the water pump backwards NOT GOOD
