Where did the term jeep come from?
There are many stories about where the name "jeep" came from. The following two reasons for the name "jeep", although they make interesting and memorable stories, aren't quite accurate. # Probably the most popular notion has it that the vehicle bore the designation "GP" (for "General Purpose"), which was phonetically slurred into the word jeep. R. Lee Ermey, on his television series Mail Call, disputes this, saying that the vehicle was designed for specific duties, was never referred to as "General Purpose," and that the name may have been derived from Ford's nomenclature referring to the vehicle as GP (G for government-use, and P to designate its 80-inch-wheelbase). "General purpose" does appear in connection with the vehicle in the WW2 TM 9-803 manual, which describes the vehicle as "... a general purpose, personnel, or cargo carrier especially adaptable for reconnaissance or command, and designated as 1/4-ton 4x4 Truck", and the vehicle is also designated a "GP" in TM 9-2800, Standard Military Motor Vehicles, 1 September, 1943, but whether the average jeep-driving GI would have been familiar with either of these manuals is open to debate.

Eugene the Jeep was a dog-like character who could walk through walls and ceilings, climb trees, fly, and just about go anywhere it wanted; it is thought that soldiers at the time were so impressed with the new vehicle's versatility that they informally named it after the character. The manuals quoted were published in 1943. The character of "Eugene the Jeep" was created in 1936. The first common use of the term "jeep" predates both of these by roughly 20 years. It was during World War I that soldiers used "jeep" as a slang word for new recruits as well as new, unproven vehicles. Hillyer had been assigned to cover a publicity stunt and Senate photo op where the jeep was presented to the public. 89-95 almost 100% compatible. there are some minor wiring differences but all important wires and vacuum lines are the same. if you're swapping motors between certain years you may find some wires will not have a connection and the "maintenance required" light will always be on (probably because of the wires to nowhere...) but everything should work fine. i have a 91 Cherokee with a 92 motor with a few wires to nowhere and i'd drive my jeep across the country any day.

What rear ends interchange with a 1997 jeep?
If you are talking about a 1997 Jeep Wrangler, you can swap out a rear end from any 97-06 wrangler. You have to consider gear ratios however. The rear needs to match the front or you won't get far. First, determine your current gear ratio, then shop around for another jeep rear end with the same ratio. If you are lucky, you can find a tag on the rear differential with the ratio stamped on it. The 4cyl models came with a lower gear ratio if that's what you are looking for. However, all models use the Dana 35 with a 27 spline axle, which is very weak and not necessarily worth spending money on. It would be better to take a Dana 44 out of a rubicon model, or reconfigure another Dana 44, then regear the front diff. Another option is the ford 8.8 out of a 95 and up explorer. It uses a 31 spline axle shaft and much beefier tubes. It is almost the same width as the dana35 and only requires cutting off the brackety and welding on the correct jeep mounts. As a bonus you get disc brakes as well, and it has the same wheel bolt pattern. Search the web and figure out what's best for you

Without hearing the tick myself my guess would be you have a lifter that is sticking. Purchase a can of Seafoam Motor Treatment at almost any auto parts store and Walmart. Add 1.5 ounces of Seafoam for each quart of oil to the crankcase. Drive 100 miles and then change the oil/filter. If the tick remains repeat the process but do not change the oil this time. By the time you reach your next oil change the tick should be gone.
