Listening is not the same as hearing. You can hear everything, but still not really be listening, and later on wonder what it was you heard! Here are some tips to improve your listening skills:
- Point your ears in the right direction. The human ears are designed so that if you are looking at something, your ears are pointed toward it, enabling you to hear best. So look at whatever you are listening to.
- Focus. When listening, you should be concentrating on what is being said, not thinking about what you'll have for lunch or what the hot guy in the next row might say. If your mind begins to wander, re-focus and pay attention to what is being said. You can also try shifting your position slightly to break the mental train of thought.
- Listen for the main ideas. If you are listening to a lecture, you can take notes whenever the speaker stresses a point or repeats anything. If you are having a conversation, listen for things like "the thing is ..." or "what I mean ..." - those are good indicators that the person feels that point is important.
- Ask questions. If anything sounds confusing to you, now is the time to ask. If you are in a lecture, you will need to raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged. If you are having a conversation, wait for the other person to pause, then ask for clarification on that point.
- Let the speaker finish. This is especially true of conversations - people "tune out" on whatever the other person is saying and start thinking of what they will say in reply, then jump right in as soon as the other person takes a deep breath. Good listening involves paying attention without interrupting the other person.
- Give feedback. Looking at the speaker is one way to show your interest. You can also nod, show emotion, or (if you are having a conversation) make those little "um-hmm" noises now and then. Making a personal connection results in better communication all around.

Learn what type of level they are at, mentally and book smarts. Then adapt yourself to that level (so you can relate) and then carefully intervene with your words. This way you have there ear because they feel like you are not the enemy but someone with problems to. After that you are a human instead of extra help because they may suck at math, English etc.. Along with their ears and a new found respect. Worked for me. I was able to help the worst of the worse this way many of times. Tutoring is two things for me; Life and the material. Let them talk at first about anything, if you got a quite one then act as if your talking to yourself about anything, bad day, good day, your dog pooping on your floor etc.. I think that an 8th grade student should get a fair amount of homework and classwork. We will be going into High school next year and if we get a low amount of work, we will be surprised and shocked about the amount of work in high school. We will basically get "pounded" with work. I think that we should get a medium amount so that we can be somewhat ready but noy too much because then we will get stressed and overwhemed since we didn't get that much work in 7th Grade.

An infinate amount. They can be anywhere from the dog ate it to I was abducted by aliens and they wiped my memory of all my homework or, my personal favorite, my homework ate the dog so we had to put it in the pound!
Some kids do, because their mind will wonder off (mostly because it will get boring for them.) Although, other kids will stay completely focused the entire time. If you just look over at them when they are doing their homework you can definitely tell.
Homework is there to help you apply the information you learned in class. It it also necessary so that your teacher will be able to assess your abilities. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, learning without practice is not really learning.
Think about it this way:
If you play sports, you practice. You learn new plays and you perform them, drill and train constantly. Why? So when it comes time for you use them in a game, they will become automatic.
Homework assignments are the drill and practice for the game, life.
