The generals sent a runner to Athens to report the triumph. When the runner reached Athens and made the report, he collapsed and died. The distance he ran is known as the Marathon.

You could, but who would want to? I guess it depends on whether or not you are interested in having a decent time or just finishing. Personally, every week is way too much as a marathon is a lot of work especially if you are running to improve or maintain your pr.

What should i do if I Catch a cold before a marathon?

It depends. If the cold is a head cold, you can carry on training as normal. If the cold is centred around the chest, you should take it easy - either dial back your training or rest up for a few days. Running will act as a decongestant, so running with a cold will clear your blocked nose - nose spits(!) - somewhat. I find it also clears a headache. If you have a cold going into the race itself, only you can decide whether to run or not. Your HR is bound to be a little elevated from being sick, so you will likely find that the last 15kms or so will see your endurance tested more than usual unless you take it easier than normal in the first half. You'll almost certainly run a slower time than you otherwise could.

Why is the length of the marathon 26 miles and 285 yards?

The length of a marathon was not fixed in 1908. When London was awarded the games, the race was advertised as about 25 miles or 40 kilometres. When it was decided to start the race near Windsor Castle, and run past Eton and Harrow (famous public schools), it was obvious that it would be more like 26 miles. Mile markers from the start were cemented in place before the stadium was finished, so although the course of the race was known, its exact distance wasn't. In the end it turned out to be 26 miles 385 yards, or 42.195 metres. The next two Olympics used different distances, but the London one became standard during a meeting of the IAAF in 1921.

Why do marathon training programs only take you to 20 miles?

Most novice runners max out at 20 miles because to run any further would leave them too tired to continue training for and running in the marathon. Having run 3 marathons and trained many others to do their first, I strongly recommend that the longest training run take no longer than 3 hours and 25 minutes and take place three weeks before the race. This should leave you in condition to continue your training and adequately recover before the race.
