PRY UP THE RETAING CLIPS SECURING THE COVER BAND AROUND THE WINDOW GLASS WITH A SMALL SCREW DRIVER CAREFULLY. LIFT AWAY COVER BAND AND STORE SAFELY OUT OF THE WAY AS THIS CAN EASILY BE BENT. GLASS IS GLUED IN PLACE AND NEEDS TO BE HEATED SLIGHTLY AROUND TOTAL OUTSIDE AREA OF WINDOW TO SOFTEN GLUE. THEN THE WINSIELD CAN BE PRYED OFF SURFACE. CLEAN AWAY ALL OLD GLUE TOTALLY. Only OBD-II cars use a scan tool that plugs into the OBD-II port. OBD-II did not come out until 1996. Furthurmore, to my knowledge, the 2nd generation rx7's didn't use any form of OBD.

In the engine compartment, on the left side, just forward of the left wheel tower, and just aft of the battery is a covered fuse box with all of the large fuses in it. Pull the cover off. The cover has a legend on it that tells you what fuse is which. The first fuse (closest to the center of the car) is the EGI computer. The second one in is the EGI injectors.

the ECU is likely different as the 89 engine has several changes that increase the power from previous versions. see if you can have the idle adjusted, if not find an ECU from an 89

the idle up and down is due to the idle air control . coolant runs through it telling the engine what the air temp is and adjust intake air according to coolant temp .. or you might just need to make sure there is enough coolant in the system . as for smoke there could be a stuck open oil metering valve or injector or a bad oil seal .

all second gen rx -7 have single exhaust that split into dual at he diff. but you can put duals on it if you want to.
but a good 2 3/4 single will work good to well mine a 86 NT has a 3inch to the diff and splits into 2 1/2 into 2 apc 4 inch muyfflers with adj baffles

there is no crankshaft in an rx-7, it has a rotary engine C12 - actually there is, its called a crank angle sensor but it is located on the block and measures the eccentril shaft (which is the equivilant to a crankshaft). if you look at the biggest metal pulley at the bottom of the engine the crank angle sensors are on the side of the strange looking metal plate on this pully, two short stuby looking things.

It's the round thingy at the top front of the engine just to the right and below the alternator . It looks like a distributor but has a flat thin cap/plate thing on top where the dizzy cap would usually go hence it has no spark plug leads. Hope this helps !

on the left rear under the car . close to the coil spring
on my 3rd gen the cooling fans fuse is in the engine bay. its a yellow blade fuse (big version) wich i think is 40amps and its next to the fuel pump relay. the fuse box is right next to the suspension strut tower. i know its a different model but hopefully it will be the same fuse, cheers.
Check for bad clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder.
