I don't believe at all the RX8 will outrun the 350z. Even though the 8 weighs 400lbs lighter than the 350z, 0-60 times will tell.
350z - 5.2 seconds
RX8 - 6.1 seconds
And if you plan on driving in the snow, the Z will not do well unless you have sandbags and full blown snow tires. I cannot say about the RX8.
Both roughly the same price, I'd say go with the Z.
The RX8 has a common problem with the coolant level sensor in the expansion tank. Unfortunately the sensor is part of the tank and so the whole unit needs to be replaced, a fairly easy job to do!

the stock battery isn't strong enough, upgrade it. engine is a notorious flooder. happens usually if you start the car and then shut it down within 1or 2 minutes of driving. If flooded, hold gas pedal to the floor and crank the engine a few times, then start as normal. odds are you will kill the battery so keep cables or a charger handy with this otherwise excellent ride. coolant light i cant help with, prob a bad sensor.
Most likely, the problem is the ignition coils, though it's a good idea to change the wires while you're in there.

I have an 05 RX8 (not much difference engine-wise between the two).
If I drive it VERY CAREFULLY, and maintain low RPMs... I get 16 MPH. I then found out (thankfully) that I was hurting the engine by doing so. It is a RACE CAR. :-)
So then I gunned it everywhere... shifting around 6000+, etc. ...and my mileage jumped to 21 MPH.
The trick is to wait for the engine to warm up first before shifting high, but then do it all you want. The best mileage I've gotten with it is 23 MPH... but that was a VERY long highway trip at a constant 80-90 MPH.
(this car really really really likes going fast)

The RX8s have a big problem with that. The first step is to try starting it as if it was a flooded engine. You can look it up in your owners manual. Try starting it. If it fails, hold the gas pedal all the way in and then try and start it. Crank it for 10 seconds. Then let off the gas and turn the car off. WAit a second then try and start it. It should start. If not than you may have a bigger problem that Mazda is still trying to figure out (something with the imobilizer security system). Take it to a dealer.
