Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a branch of engineering that encompasses the generation and application of heat and mechanical power and the design, production, and use of machines and tools. Mechanical engineering involves application of the principles of dynamics, control, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, materials science, electronics, and mathematics.

What is the tensile strength of 1035 steel?

How long is a piece of string? You have to go back and look at your customer needs. Verify your answers against a sensitivty analysis. It's all on black board.

What is the definition of rigging?

In sailing: the ropes used to move the sails around so the boat will move in the right direction when the wind blows. In elections: predetermining the outcome by cheating with the votes. In entertainment: heavy objects temporarily hung overhead such as lighting or trusses.

What is Welding Speed and Welding time for Co2 Welding Process?

Your question is incomplete. Which process? Which electrode? What is the basemetal, which position? etc etc

What is smart ammunition?

Specially designed amunition that can seek out and destroy plumbers in red hats. they are easily stopped by being jumped on. A good description would be a giant bullet with spike teeth and an evel grin.

What is a bolster in forging?

A bolster contains the die blocks. A hammer / press has a top and bottom bolster which the die is locked into. The bolster decreases die change time by using wedges over bolts and are also heated depending on die material and material to be forged.

Is there a way to tell the difference between cold steel and hot rolled steel If so how can you tell?

Why does Hot Rolled Steel have a rough, blue-grey finish, while Cold Finished Steel has a smooth grey finish?

Hot Rolled Steels are just that - They are heated up red-hot and pushed through rollers that squeeze the metal, literally squishing it into a particular profile, depending on the shape of the rollers. The process takes a long time, and because the steel is so hot for so long in the open air of the steel mill, the surface of the metal has has a long time to oxidize, producing a thick, tough oxide scale with the characteristic blue grey finish of the final product.

Cold Finished Steels are just that - the final rolling is done when the steel is cold (room temperature), the whole operation bathed in oil, so the finished product is unoxidized, the grey of the actual steel, and as smooth as the rollers that do the processing.

What is a forced draft cooling tower?

These are the large towers you will see at a coal fired power station amongst numerous other applications. e.g. In a coal fired power station, burning the coal heats water to produce steam which is in turn used to generate electricity. The water is usually taken directly from an adjacent river and then returned to the river. If the water was not cooled first then the temperature of the river water would rise and completely change the eco-system within. Therefore, the waste hot process water is passed through cooling towers. The shape of the cooling tower draws heat from the water, expelling it to the atmosphere before returning it to the river to minimise the rise in river temperature. See this web article for more information.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooling_tower

What are the advantages of mechanical engineering?

Mechanical engineers are found in almost all sectors of industry. So, employment prospects are good. Also, because it is a core engineering discipline, having a a great knowledge in mechanical engineering enables you to enter fields or pursue advanced study in other areas such as bioengineering, environmental engineering, and nanotechnology............

What is arc crater?

Arc crater is the depression in the molten metal created by the end of the welding electrode during the welding of metal.

Why axial flow turbines blades are twisted?

The blades of an axial flow turbine have the aerofoil shape...

Also, for the axial flow turbines... Vf1=Vf2

The water strikes the blade surface at the same time from the root to its tip and a stream of water will leave the water at the correspondin trailing edge.

Therefore, for inlet to outlet, the radius and blade velocity will be the same,BUT the blade velocity will be different at different sections of the blade due to variation in the radial distance, which implies that the velocity triangles for each section of the blade will be different. In order to achieve shockless flow, the inlet and outlet triangles of a blade must vary from root to its tip,and therefore, axial flow turbine blades are twisted...

Why CO2 can not be used as shielding gas in GTAW?

CO2 is an oxygen compound or a non-inert gas,the purpose of a shielding gas is to shield the weld and the electrode from oxygen. argon, nitrogen and helium are the most common gases used for GTAW

What products are in the engineering fabrication sector?

some examples include climbing frames, park railings, shopping trollies and ammunition boxes but there are alot more besides them

What are the factors which effetcs ignition lag?

it is same as ignition delay. it is the time gap between the injection of fuel and the first particle of mixture which get ignited

What is warm rolling of steam turbine?

You don't start a large turbine cold. Typically, the lubrication system is started, the turning gear is engaged and warming steam (a small amount of steam, not enough to turn the turbine) is admitted to the turbine to warm and initially expand the shaft and casing. If this isn't done, thermal shock from the admission of high pressure superheated steam into the cold turbine could damage it.

Why is engine room of ships isolated in case of fire in engine room?

The engine room is designed so it can be sealed off completely in case of fire, in order to:

1. Prevent the fire from spreading to other areas.

2. Starve the fire of oxygen.

3. Be able to pump in and maintain a fire fighting gas such as CO2 (which smothers it) or Halon (which inhibits combustion).

Will the force applied to lift a brick reduce if you use pulleys?

yes, pulley will help IF not the if YOU USE COMBINE TWO OR MORE PULLEYS.

Yes, using a pulley or a system of pulleys will reduce the force needed to lift a brick (or anything). HOWEVER the distance that the rope (or whatever effects the pulley system) has to now travel further so that the energy required to lift the brick through an equal height is always the same.

What is the difference between heme iron and nonheme iron supplements?

Heme iron is more efficiently absorbed by the body, but non-heme iron can also be effective if used in conjunction with vitamin C and other dietary sources of heme iron.
