Why petrol engines are used for light duty purpose and diesel engines for heavy duty purpose?
In simple terms, the petrol ("gasoline") contains fewer calories/btus per unit, so it can't do as much work as an equivilent amount of diesel. Diesel, being heavier, is more energy-dense, therefore capable of doing more work. More energy per unit means more work, and that translates into more a more valuable product, which is why diesel costs more than petrol.
Which gear turns faster if the driving gear is larger than the drive gear?
The drive gear will turn faster. If the driving gear was twice the size of the drive gear, the drive gear would rotate twice for every revolution of the said driving gear.
How does a cigarette lighter work?
It depends on the type of lighter.
Butane lighters - When you spin the wheel, it hits the flint and creates sparks. Then as you push down the flat part (which is often red) it releases gas and the sparks from the flint ignite the gas thus making fire.
Reusable fluid lighters - These are metal lighters and contain wadding and/or a sponge which contains liquid lighter fluid, and a wick extends up to a wheel and flint. These work somewhat like a kerosene lantern. The flint and wheel lights the fuel-soaked wick. Folding the lid shut smothers out the fire. These are ideal for lighting pipes and cigars since you don't have to hold down any lever.
Electric lighters - These are found in cars and were once used in buildings. A special wire creates electrical resistance and heat as electricity passes through it. It doesn't create an open flame, but does get just hot enough to light a cigarette. In a car, the lighter is spring loaded, and there is metal designed to stick to hold the lighter in the socket to make contact. Then as it becomes hot enough to use, the metal gives and the spring makes it pop out, alerting you to the fact it is ready to use. Car lighters can be used for both cigarettes and cigars. Wall lighters use a heating element like in the car lighters, but those work by sticking a cigarette through a hole and holding a button until it is lit. Some would colloquially call it "kissing the wall."
What is the difference between hot and cold working table?
The names say it all...
Cold working is done cold, i.e. part at room temperature. It essentially pushed into something to deform it. This yields the part, technically increasing its yield for further use, but it will decrease the stress required to go from its new yield to its max tensile. Be advised, for very thick parts, like bars above 2", only the outer portions will cold work, the core will keep the same properties as un-worked metal.
Hot working heats the part up above its recrystallization temperature so along with deformation, the part recrystallizes, thereby not cold working it. Hot working does not give a yield strength increase like cold working does.
Does a fire truck carry water in a reserve tank?
Some do - particularly those which serve rural areas - but some are set up to where they must be connected to a fire hydrant.
What are the advantages of a dual modulus synthesizer over a single modulus synthesizer?
Large frequency resolution and low frequency of operation
How do you calculate welding electrode consumption the for a groove in metals?
machine is the mechanical engine
g and aromatically to use it
How does point loading affect beam sizing versus uniform loading with point load in center of beam?
The moment of a beam is twice that for central load vs uniform load for a simple support beam; hence it needs twice the section modulus for sizing; for fixed ends the moment is 50% higher for central load vs uniform load
How rivited joints are made in air tight?
Riveted joints are made by drilling and deburring the rivet holes. Then hot rivets are driven (the rivet fits loosely into the hole, the driver crushes the hot rivet until it fills the hole tightly) into the holes. As the rivet cools it shrinks in length, tightening the joint (pulls the plates together). Overlapping joints (where one joint overlaps another joint) are scarfed (thinned) to fit together smoothly. After the rivets are cool the edges of the plates, or straps are caulked (upset along the edge) with a caulking chisel, to form an air tight or steam/water tight seal.
How many forces acting are on a water rocket?
There are two forces acting on a water rocket. The thrust which the force that is given to the water rocket to make it move, and the other one is the gravity.
What is the ultimate heat sink for nuclear reactors?
"Ultimate Heas Sink" is a vitrually unlimited supply of water that can be used by nuclear reactors to cool vital systems and their primary containment during worse case (design basis) accidents. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires all nuclear plants operating in the US to maintain emergency systems that can remove heat from vital systems in the event of a design basis worse case accident. Designers of nuclear reactors have determined what kind of accident would be the worse possible accident to happen, and they have designed systems to mitigate those accidents. These systems must operate independent of external sources of electricity, or other resources. These systems include (but are not limited to) emergency generators (usually diesel powered), emergency sources of pneumatics, containment structures and suppression pools capable of receiving and suppressing the energy that could be released from the reactor vessel if it ruptured. All of the systems mentioned above either generate heat, or remove heat from other systems and components . This heat must be removed in order for these systems to continue to function. Therefore, each plant must have an "Ultimate Heat Sink" capable of removing heat from the primary containment and other vital systems necessary to mitigate a worse case accident. Usually, the ultimate heat sink is a large body of water such as a river or a lake. If the water level or temperature of the "Ultimate Heat Sink" for a nuclear plant drops to a pre-defined level, or if other conditions exist to where the "Ultimate Heat Sink" cannot provide the required heat removal function, then the nuclear plant is bound by regulation to shut down. The water from the "Ultimate Heat Sink" is passed through large heat exchangers where it cools other mediums. For this reason, the water from the ultimate heat sink does not become contaminated with radioactivity from the nuclear plant.
State applications of rotary engine?

How much does 2 inch diameter steel pipe weigh?
You need to specify the wall thickness in order to calculate the weight.
How does a Ljungstrom steam turbine work and look like?
Ljungstrom Turbine is a Radial Outflow Steam Turbine with two counter rotating discs. Blades are mounted in circles one bigger than the other. Blades of one rotor work as nozzles for the other rotor blades. This turbine design is very forgiving on wet steam. It is said that the turbine design had limitations on scaling up above 30 MW and hence could not compete with Axial Flow Turbines.
Hortonsphere is a spherical pressure vessel used to storage compressed gases in liquid+gas stage (Hydrocarbons, Fuel gases etc.). The name "Hortonsphere" is a trademark registered by Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (CBI). "Horton" is in honor to Horace Ebenezer Horton who has funded the CBI company. The first hortonsphere was built in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1923.

What is function of adjusting ring in spring loaded pressure safety valve?
The function of the adjusting ring is to adjust the blowdown pressure of the safety valve. By ASME rules this must be adjusted to 2% of the set pressure, or a minimum of 2 psi.
If the valve is set to lift at 100 psig or less then the blowdown must be set at 2 psi. If higher then it must be set at 2%. Thus, for a safety valve that lifts at 300 psig, the blowdown will be set (at 2%) such that the valve will reseat when the pressure drops to 294 psig. In many states that have adopted ASME rules, these settings cannot be changed except by an authorized safety valve repair shop holding a National Board repair or assembly "V" or "VR" stamp.
What is a relation between HP and CC?
In short: there is no real realtionship between them, if any (in my opinion). bhp can be increased in various ways -- using more volatile fuel, turbo chargers etc. Where as cubic capacity is calculated:
(πr2)h
i.e. the area of the piston (in cubic CM(CC)) multiplyed by the length of the stroke from Top Dead Centre (TDC) to Bottom Dead Centre (BDC).
