Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a branch of engineering that encompasses the generation and application of heat and mechanical power and the design, production, and use of machines and tools. Mechanical engineering involves application of the principles of dynamics, control, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, materials science, electronics, and mathematics.

10,989 Questions

A material is said to be ductile if?

A material is considered ductile if it can be stretched or deformed without breaking. Ductility is the ability of a material to exhibit plastic deformation under tensile stress before fracture occurs. Materials like metals, such as gold and copper, are known for their ductile properties.

What are the main features of the milling machine?

Milling machines are tools that can be hand or power driven to machine a variety of materials, incorporating dynamic movement and orientation to achieve superior tolerances.

What is a pneumatic handtool?

They are powered by compressed air, supplied via an air-hose under high pressure from an electric or petrol engined compressor.

What is the properties of cutting tool material?

Harder than work piece

High thermal conductivity

High heat transfer coefficient

How do you calculate the stress of a glass?

Same as any other material. Glass has a thickness, inertia, area, modulus, etc. like all materials.

If u mean strength of glass, ask again

What is an example of a substitutional alloy?

An example of a substitutional alloy is sterling silver, which is a mixture of silver and copper. In this alloy, copper atoms replace some of the silver atoms in the crystal lattice structure, resulting in a material with improved strength and durability compared to pure silver.

What happens when you put diesel in hydraulic tank?

The main thing that happens when there is water in diesel fuel is that it will burn poorly or maybe not even at all. It will also sink to the bottom of the fuel tank.

Can you hear a space ship explode in space?

Only if you're in another spacecraft, and the sound would be more of the shockwave than the actual explosion.

++

That's not correct. You would neither hear nor feel it as there is nothing to transmit the sound or shock-wave (essentially the same thing, a compression-wave through a medium). Your own craft might be hit by debris though.

When should you drill a pilot hole?

A pilot hole can be to help direct a screw in situations where alignment is important. Most commonly it is used to ease the process of fastening the screw and reducing potential damage to threads in the process.

Carbide cutting tool?

What Welding electrode can be used to weld A 36steel to AISI 4140 steel?

I have experience when my team welded "JIG Ladle" A36 to AISI 4140, we used electrode E7018 with SMAW process. The important thing for this welding's prehating during welding min. 180 degree celcius and did peening the weld beads to minimize residual stresses. After welding covered by blanket for slow cooling. Regards, Asep S (asep93st@yahoo.com)

When calculating the mechanical advantage of a lever what two pieces of information are needed?

You need to know the length of the lever and the location of the fulcrum along that length. The ratio of the lengths on either side of the fulcrum will determine the ratio of forces at either end. The length of the lever will dictate the total force possible. For a lever of length L divided into lengths a and (L - a) by the fulcrum (where a is the length of the lever between the fulcrum and the object you want to apply force to), the mechanical advantage will be

M.A = (L-a)/a

The longer the lever, the bigger you can make the numerator of that fraction while keeping a unchanged.

Is N a metal?

N is the symbol of Nitrogen, and nitrogen is NOT a metal

What are disadvantages of vapour compression refrigeration system?

Vapour compression refrigeration systems have several disadvantages, including energy inefficiency, as they often require significant electrical power to operate compressors. They also rely on refrigerants that can have high global warming potential and may contribute to ozone depletion if leaked. Additionally, these systems can be complex and costly to maintain, as they involve moving parts that are susceptible to wear and tear. Finally, they may not perform efficiently in extremely high or low ambient temperatures.

Why is mercury used in diffusion pump?

At normal room temperatures, mercury has a low vapor pressure combined with a high mass, which makes diffusion pumping more efficient.

How much solar energy reaches Earth?

about 120,000 TW (terrawatts)
that's 120,000,000,000,000,000 TW
The planet itself sees about 352 watts/meter squared. The stratosphere sees much more, about 1366 watts/ meter squared. The rest of this energy is reflected back into space by our atmosphere.

What are the applications of Eigenvalue and eigenvector in Engineering?

Have you ever seen the video of the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge? The Tacoma Bridge was built in 1940. From the beginning, the bridge would form small waves like the surface of a body of water. This accidental behavior of the bridge brought many people who wanted to drive over this moving bridge. Most people thought that the bridge was safe despite the movement. However, about four months later, the oscillations (waves) became bigger. At one point, one edge of the road was 28 feet higher than the other edge. Finally, this bridge crashed into the water below. One explanation for the crash is that the oscillations of the bridge were caused by the frequency of the wind being too close to the natural frequency of the bridge. The natural frequency of the bridge is the eigenvalue of smallest magnitude of a system that models the bridge. This is why eigenvalues are very important to engineers when they analyze structures. (Differential Equations and Their Applications, , pp. ).

Car designers analyze eigenvalues in order to damp out the noise so that the occupants have a quiet ride. Eigenvalue analysis is also used in the design of car stereo systems so that the sounds are directed correctly for the listening pleasure of the passengers and driver. When you see a car that vibrates because of the loud booming music, think of eigenvalues. Eigenvalue analysis can indicate what needs to be changed to reduce the vibration of the car due to the music.

Eigenvalues can also be used to test for cracks or deformities in a solid. Can you imagine if every inch of every beam used in construction had to be tested? The problem is not as time consuming when eigenvalues are used. When a beam is struck, its natural frequencies (eigenvalues) can be heard. If the beam "rings," then it is not flawed. A dull sound will result from a flawed beam because the flaw causes the eigenvalues to change. Sensitive machines can be used to "see" and "hear" eigenvalues more precisely.

Oil companies frequently use eigenvalue analysis to explore land for oil. Oil, dirt, and other substances all give rise to linear systems which have different eigenvalues, so eigenvalue analysis can give a good indication of where oil reserves are located. Oil companies place probes around a site to pick up the waves that result from a huge truck used to vibrate the ground. The waves are changed as they pass through the different substances in the ground. The analysis of these waves directs the oil companies to possible drilling sites.

Eigenvalues are not only used to explain natural occurrences, but also to discover new and better designs for the future. Some of the results are quite surprising. If you were asked to build the strongest column that you could to support the weight of a roof using only a specified amount of material, what shape would that column take? Most of us would build a cylinder like most other columns that we have seen. However, Steve Cox of Rice University and Michael Overton of New York University proved, based on the work of J. Keller and I. Tadjbakhsh, that the column would be stronger if it was largest at the top, middle, and bottom. At the points of the way from either end, the column could be smaller because the column would not naturally buckle there anyway.
Does that surprise you? This new design was discovered through the study of the eigenvalues of the system involving the column and the weight from above. Note that this column would not be the strongest design if any significant pressure came from the side, but when a column supports a roof, the vast majority of the pressure comes directly from above.

Is mild steel malleable?

Yes, Mild steel has a property of malleability, it completely depends on its chemistry. If you have an option to choose the chemical composition, you must choose lower carbon, Manganese content.

Why do you use simple and compound machines?

We use machines because it saves us time doing it ourself, and if we use machines it will save us time XD
