What type of data is in a plain ASCII text file?

It would just be pure text characters, so things like letters, digits, punctuation symbols and other symbols that you can get from your keyboard. It would not be things like a photograph, which is a graphical file.

Difference between forms and reports in ms access?

Forms

Reports

Forms are sometimes referred to as "data entry screens."

Reports are used to summarize and present data in the tables

Most database users prefer to use forms for viewing, entering, and editing data in the tables.

Each report can be formatted to present the information in the most readable way possible

You can change the values of underlying data with a form.

You cannot change the value of the underlying data for a report with a control object from the toolbox as you can with forms

Forms provide datasheet view.

Reports do not provide a Datasheet view. Only Print Preview and Report Design views are available.

Translation of global queries to fragment queris?

It has six specific rule to be precise.....

1)Use impotence of selection and projection to generate appropriate selections and projections for each operand relation.

2)Push selections and projections down in the tree as far as possible.

3)push selections down to the leaves of the tree, and then apply them using the algebra of qualified relations; substitute the selection result with the empty relation if the qualification of the result is contradictory.

4)Use the algebra of qualified relations to evaluate the qualification of operands of joins; substitute the subtree, including the join and its operands, with the empty relation if the qualification of the result of join is contradictory.

5)In order to distribute joins which appear in the global query, unions must be pushed up,beyond the joins that we want to distribute.

6)In order to distribute grouping and aggregate function evaluations appearing in a global query, unions must be pushed up,beyond the corresponding group-by operation.

Do you need to learn Excel before Access?

No. You can learn either one of them first, or even just learn one of them. There are a lot of things that both can do, so when you do learn one, it can help in learning the other. As they are designed for different jobs, Excel for spreadsheets and Access for databases, it doesn't matter which you learn first.

What will happen if you change the data type of a field and what consequences of this action?

It will depend on what type you are changing from and to. You may lose some data. You may not be able to carry out some operations on some data. If something has gone from number to text, that could be the case. You can't convert some types, like text to a number. Programs may not run properly or may crash as a result of some data changes. You may have to redesign some forms and reports when data types change, and also some queries. So if data types have to be changed, it needs to be very carefully done. With proper planning and design to start with, data types should not need to be changed.

What are the Access data types and how they are used?

In Access and in databases in general each field in a database table is of a certain data type. The data type determines what type of data a field can hold. A field of the text data type can hold text, a field of the number data type can hold numbers and a field of the data/time data type can hold date and time values.

Access actively checks what type of data is entered into a field and Access will disallow the entry of data into a field that doesn't conform to the field's data type. Access won't allow you to put text into a field of the Number data type, for example.

So, data types are a way to restrict the entry of data into a field. Internally, the database uses different strategies for the storage and retrieval of different data types.

How long does it take to become comfortable with VBA?

It is highly dependant on your own ability to pick up and learn the syntax for the language (It is very similar to VB.net in terms of the actual wording and syntax).

Alongside that, if you have any experience in programming logic this time will be reduced significantly, since most languages have some fundamental similarities (Looping for example).

Start with excel and record a few macros and do some simple things on screen, flick to the visual basic for application editor and check out what you did in code and come to understand the object and properties relationship. (E.g ActiveCell.Value = 1)

Start to look at a few sources to explain the concept of iteration to you (E.g. instead making Cells A1:A10 yellow by writing 10 different lines of code, loop through the cells and make each one yellow as you go along).

Finally, start looking into object oriented programming and learn to separate your code into smaller functions and subroutines so they can be used with greater extensibility.

(E.g. if you have 300 different subroutines that all make something yellow, and you decide you want it to make it red instead, you have to change 300 lines of code, instead if you make them all point to the same location, you only have to change 1)

How can usability of MS Access be improved?

Just a few ideas:

-Speed could be improved

-Space of storage could be increased

-Type of data inserted could be varied

-Ways of importing info could be more, so you can import from different places.

How do you join two tables in an Access query where it returns all fields that are not in one of the tables only?

I am confused with your question, so I will do both interpretations. The query wizards may help you but you didn't say which Access you are using so we will do it in the query builder instead.

.................

You have a table with 25 keys and a table with 10 foreign keys for this example. This could be a one-to-one relationship or a one-to-many in which the 'many' table just has records that match some of the keys in the 'one' table.

You want to see all the 25-key table and anything in the 10-key table that matches. So 15 of the keys from 25-key will not match the 10-key table but you want to see them anyway.

In the query builder, link the key fields going from the 25 table to the 10 table. Then right-click on the link and select the 2nd option "show all from 25-table and the matching records in the 10-table".

Run the query. You will see everything from the 25-table. In the fields from the 10-table there will be blanks where nothing matches.

..................

My second guess is you want to see the ones that don't have a matching key. If it matches you don't care about it, like when you are trying to find keys to fix so you can have integrity between the tables.

You have a table with 10 keys and a table with 25 foreign keys and you need to find those extra 15 foreign keys so you can fix the data integrity. (Notice that this is the opposite of the 2 tables in example 1 - the extras are in the foreign key table. You will most often have this problem when you import data, not when you are doing data entry.)

In the query builder link the tables, 25-table to 10-table. Again do the right-click on the link and select the 2nd option.

Show only the fields of the 25-table down in the bottom part. Now drag the key field from the 10-table down to the grid. Un-check the box under the field name and table name. In the criteria row type "Is Null".

Run the query. You will see the records from the 25-foriegn key table that need to have keys set up in the 10-key table.

..................

In both cases, if you want to filter the records do it in queries and then link the filter queries instead of the tables.

This is an over-simplification and I am assuming you have actual key fields set up, like an autonumber field on the 'one' side. If you have something like "blue", "red", "green" as your key field you have some real work to do.

What can you do in Microsoft Access?

Microsoft Access doesn't have anything to do with gaming. It's application for database creation and managing created by Microsoft to help independent user's and corporations with their various needs for databases. If you want directions on how to actually use it. Then go here: http://www.functionx.com/access/

How do you use if then and else statements in Microsoft access 2003?

In Microsoft Access the function used to create an if, then, else formula is IIf and the format is:

IIf (data to be tested, value if true, value if false). The value if false is optional.

In this example IF the home team and visiting teams scores are equal THEN award 1 point, ELSE award 0 points (for clarity I have deleted the part of the formula that awards 3 points for a win).

PointsHome: IIf([HomeScore]=[VisitorScore],1,0))
