Why don't Mormon's drink tea or coffee?

"Mormon's?" I'm assuming you meant to be asking about MormonS (without the stray apostrophe).

It's against the Word of Wisdom, which is kind of like mini-commandments.

There are thought to be ill health effects connected to the acid and caffeine that are in them.

----------

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) follow a health code called the Word of Wisdom, which was revealed by God to Joseph Smith. Part of this code prohibits the use of "hot drinks" which was later defined by President Smith as coffee and tea. Some Mormons today will drink herbal teas and drinks such as apple cider and hot chocolate, but will not drink green, black, or iced teas or anything containing coffee.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) was organized on April 6, 1830 in Palmyra, New York by Joseph Smith, Jr. Church members believe that he was visited by Jesus Christ and instructed on how to restore the original first century Christian Church to the earth.

So far, about 140 years! :) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) moved it's headquarters to Utah under the direction of Brigham Young in the 1840's. Brigham Young died in the 1870's. Today, the headquarters of the Church is still there, on the same block where Brigham Young said it should be. Two of his homes are on the block as well and are popular tourist attractions as historic museums, and also serve as a cafe and reception center.

In How many countries is Mormon the principal religion?

There is no country in which the Mormonism is the principal religion. The Mormons now a day are basically in every country of the planet, with a few exceptions, but no country has adopted the Mormonism as the principal religion of its land. There was a state though, in the United States, that was founded and originally settled by Mormons only, and until not too long, it was considered to be the Mormon state, this is Utah. Nevertheless, today, less than 50% of Utah's population is Mormon. www.lds.org

Why did Mormon's have 4 wives any connection with Islam?

I will admit that there is a much similarity in doctrine between the two religions, but the reason why some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints had multiple wives in the early years of the church was not because of any connection with Islam. I suppose the simple reason is because Joseph Smith, who is considered a prophet, received a revelation from God that some members of the church should practice polygamy. This was often times only grudgingly accepted by those called to practice it. Also, there was never a specific number placed on how many wives one might have. Most polygamists had two or three, but some had many more.

Please remember that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints no longer practices polygamy and is not connected with any polygamous groups. Any members found practicing today would be excommunicated.

Where did the Mormons come from orginially?

Who were some of Joseph Smith's friends?

Because Joseph Smith moved a lot in his lifetime, his friends varied. He probably considered members of his immediate family as his closest friends, especially his brother Hyrum, who was murdered with him. Other close friends include Oliver Cowdry, the Whitmer family, Martin Harris, the Knight family, Sydney Rigdon, Parley and Orson Pratt, W.W. Phelps, Porter Rockwell, and Newel K. Whitney.

Joseph was very fond of people and considered most everyone he met as his friend. He was usually out among the people and often held parties in his home.

Mormon spouses secret names?

I think you are referring to the new name given to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) who are endowed in the Temple. The Endowment is a ceremony that many adult Mormons choose to participate in. As a part of the ceremony, the participant is given a new name which will be used to call them up at the resurrection. They are instructed to always keep their new name a secret, with one exception. Endowed women who are 'sealed' (married) to their husbands in the Temple are asked to reveal their new name to their husband, who will assist in calling them up at the resurrection. This revealing of the name is typically done in the Temple within a week of the wedding date. Men and unmarried women will never reveal their new name to anyone.

The names given are found in the Bible. (e.g., for women: Sarah, Eve, Mary, etc; and for men: John, Matthew, Adam, etc.)

Who were the first 12 leaders in the Mormon church?

This depends on what you mean by "leader". The leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Jesus Christ. He reveals His will pertaining to the Church to the Prophet/President. There have been 16 of these in the history of the Church, being:

Joseph Smith, Jr.

Brigham Young

John Taylor

Wilford Woodruff

Lorenzo Snow

Joseph F. Smith

Heber J. Grant

George Albert Smith

David O. McKay

Joseph Fielding Smith

Harold B. Lee

Spencer W. Kimball

Ezra Taft Benson

Howard W. Hunter

Gordon B. Hinckley

Thomas S. Monson

The Prophet/President has two counselors, these three make up the "First Presidency". Twelve Apostles also lead the Church and work with the First Presidency. That makes 15 men who are leading the Church at any given time.

The first First Presidency and Twelve Apostles of the Church were:

Joseph Smith, Jr., President

Sydney Rigdon and Fredrick G Williams, Counselors

Oliver Cowdery, Assistant to the President (no longer a position in the Church)

with Apostles:

Thomas B. Marsh

David W. Patton

Brigham Young

Heber C. Kimball

Orson Hyde

William E. McLellin

Parley P. Pratt

Luke S. Johnson

William Smith

Orson Pratt

John F. Boynton

Lyman E. Johnson

Why is the Mormon fort important to Nevada?

As a matter of historical and cultural significance, the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort was the first settlement in the area by anyone of European descent. Mormon missionaries located a site near the Las Vegas Springs in 1855, and it became the mid-point along the trail from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles. The Mormons' stay, however, was cut short with the beginning of the Utah War. The fort was abandoned, and subsquently used by both the military and, later, private interests. Currently it has been restored and is a state park.

What do fundamentalist members of the LDS church believe?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS or "Mormon" church) does not really have 'fundamentalist' members. Of course some are more devout in their religious practice than others, but all are expected to believe the published doctrines of the Church. (You can learn about these doctrines at the "Related Links" below.)

You may be thinking of members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also called the FLDS church). This group broke off from the LDS or Mormon church over 100 years ago in a dispute over the practice of polygamy. The FLDS today differs quite a lot from the LDS church. The FLDS continue to practice polygamy, have very strict modest dressing standards, generally live in isolated communities, and are expected to have firm devotion to their prophet. In general, although both churches share the same scripture and early history, the FLDS is much more extreme in their doctrine and practice than the mostly mainstream LDS church.

Does the church own the LDS hospital?

No. LDS hospital is owned and operated by Intermountain Health Care. It was originally owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints but was turned over to Intermountain in 1975. They kept the same name just for name recoginition and marketing purposes. The same is with Primary Childrens Medical Center, which began as the children's ward of LDS hospital and eventually grew into it's own facility.
