Who forbade polygamy in Christianity?

Answer A

As is the case with divorce, polygamy, while not God's original arrangement, was tolerated until the time of the christain congergation in 33 CE. Polygamy is first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 4:19, concerning Lamech a descendant of Cain had two wives. It is interesting to note that polygamy and concubinage helped the Israelites increase at a much faster rate. However as stated in Mattew19:4-8 and Mark10:2-9 a man would leave his mother and father and stick to his wife and the two would be one flesh. Note the phrase "one flesh" a person who is a polygamist cannot be one flesh with multiple wives.

Answer B (Hint on Answer A above)
  • polygamy is God arrangement. Otherwise how God prophets Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Solomon, ..., and Muhammad married with more than one. Jesus is not to be reckoned as he is the only exception (Jesus is an exception in his birth, in the age he was given the holy book, in his miracles, in his raise up to the Heavens, and in his short life on earth).
  • To forbid something or to allow it, it should be according to direct command from God, or His prophet, not to be decided in a Christian congregation.
  • To be as one flesh is just visualizing the intimate contact between the two partners. This does not contradict with polygamy.
  • I am personally against polygamy. However, I prefer to have the right for it just in case I need it for any reason as life illness of wife, need for a child if the present wife has medical problems to give, or any other reason (however, to have a second wife should be with the approval and blessing of the first one).
  • Banning polygamy plus banning divorce may motivate you to practice religiously forbidden sexual relations.

What community SERVICE needs are compatible with the LDS church standards?

Any type of community service should be compatible with the standards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Church and it's members tend to be very active in community and humanitiarian service, and are willing to help out just about anywhere. Often they will collaborate with other secular or religious groups in service projects as well. Common projects Church members participate in are community clean-up, food and clothing drives, assisting the elderly with yardwork, serving at homeless shelters and soup kitchens, and making blankets, clothing, and hygiene kits for victims of natural disasters. They often solicit donations for various causes, such as medical and educational supplies for third-world countries. LDS groups have even helped build churches and worship spaces for other religions!

If you would like to collaborate in a service project with members of the LDS Church, or have a community service idea for a local congregation to participate in, just ask any Church member how to contact their local leaders. Chances are they'd love to help out!

What is the Mormon doctrine of burying their dead?

Beyond showing respect for the body, there is no set doctrine about burial of the dead. By tradition most members of the faith are buried but there is no actual requirement to do so. Members who have made temple covenants (basically covenanting in an LDS Temple to obey the commandments and otherwise live according to the Gospel) are usually buried in white clothing and their graves dedicated by a member of the Church holding the Melchizedek (senior) priesthood as a final resting place of their body until the resurrection.

What is the difference between Mormon and Catholic?

Both Catholics and Mormons claim to have a line of priesthood authority back to Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church believes that their line of authority descends unbroken all the way back to Jesus Christ. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) believes that the Catholic Church lost this authority somewhere along the way, and that it has been restored to them.

Both Mormons and Catholics believe that one must be baptized to enter heaven. Catholics have a tradition of baptizing infants, to remove original sin, and make salvation possible. Catholics usually baptize by immersion or pouring water over the forehead. Catholics *never* "sprinkle" as is common among protestants. Mormons baptize by immersion and will only baptize people age 8 or older because they believe that little children are innocent. Mormons also believe that an unbaptized person can accept a baptism performed in their behalf after their death, so they perform baptisms for their dead ancestors.

Catholics believe in the Trinity - one God in Three Persons. Mormons believe that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three individual beings.

Catholics use only the Bible as scripture. Mormons use the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price, in addition to the words of their current leaders.

Mormons do not pray to Jesus, or through Mary or any saints, as many Catholics do. They pray to God the Father through Jesus Christ only.

Culturally, Catholics members tend to be more liberal than Mormon members. Mormons tend to be more strict about dressing modestly, following their health code, and avoiding secular activities on the Sabbath. There are some very conservative or strict Catholics, and some very liberal Mormons, so this is just a generalization.

Catholics have vocations in which God calls them to dedicate their lives totally to the Church (such as sisters, nuns, monks, and priests). This can be compared to Mormon missionary service, although Mormon missionary service is temporary and Catholic vocations are lifetime commitments.

Structurally, they are quite similar. The Catholic Church has the Pope at the head, with Bishops overseeing various geographical regions or departments. The Mormon church has the Prophet at the head, with Apostles and Seventies overseeing various geographical regions and departments. Local congregations are organized into geographic groups (Catholic Diocese or Mormon Stake). Additionally, a central headquarters (Catholics in Rome, Mormons in Salt Lake City) is the home of most of the international leadership. Both Mormons and Catholics will only ordain men to the priesthood.

In addition to these differences, Mormons and Catholics have few similarities in belief, but some in the hierarchical structure of the churches, though they both have a pretty strict moral code. The two churches often support each other in various pursuits.

Examples of collaboration between the two churches can be seen in the "related links" below.

What was Joseph Smith's weakness?

Joseph's weakness was his Christian charity. He made an attempt at being a banker, but the bank failed miserably because he lent money to everybody in need. He made a similar attempt at owning a general store leading to another failure because he extended credit to his friends and neighbors.

When were there 45000 Mormons in Nauvoo?

Why are environmentalist so annoying?

Several potential reasons spring to mind. Some fall on them, some on you.:

  • People with a mission (environmental activists, evangelists, Amway salesment, etc.) can tend to always be on topic for their pet interest. Like the saying "To a man with just a hammer, everything is a nail." Others without this burning desire to know about the topic just aren't interested.
  • Some people just don't want to reminded that things are going downhill and something should be done. This is the same reaction that older guys exhibit when relatives, doctors and TV commercials remind them that a colonoscopy is a good idea after fifty. They know, but they don't want to be told, and they definitely don't want to participate in the test. After all if they don't check it out everything will be just fine (until it's not)
  • Some environmentalists know their stuff, People who get all their facts from FOXX news and radio talk show hosts don't like having their beliefs shredded by the truth and the science
  • Some people are interested in nonthinking items - any mention of science, technology, math and so on turns them off.
  • Some people feel left out when the topic turns to the environment. They haven't kept up and it all sounds so dire.
  • Some people, no mater what they want to talk about, are just plain annoying.

A major problem with negative experiences is that people remember the ones that Provo their point. In this case meeting 100 environmentalists, some wonderful people, some pleasant, some annoying and some that you just couldn't stand will generally result in you only remembering the ones you disliked. As consequence in relating the experience you would refer to the entire group as "annoying"

What is the latter day saints word of wisdom?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) believe that the body is a sacred gift from God, and that we should take care of it. The Word of Wisdom, (standards to live by as to what we eat, drink, etc) includes:

1. No coffee. Coffee is a substance that many people rely upon to function, it becomes addictive and that is not good.

2. No alcohol. For obvious reasons LDS members believe that we should not drink alcohol.

3. No tobacco. Again, the reason behind not using tobacco is obvious. It causes cancer and other diseases.

4. No tea. Tea also contains caffeine, which is an addictive substance and should be avoided.

5. No drugs. This can range from marijuana to hydrocodone. (of course prescription drugs are the exception when used properly)

That's pretty much it. These things listed above can be harmful to our bodies and are simply unhealthy. There is nothing strange about the Word of Wisdom, it is just to help people stay healthy.

Is the book of Mormon nonfiction or fiction?

That all depends on your opinion. Mormons believe that the Book of Mormon is a true account - nonfiction. Others believe that the Book of Mormon is a made up story - fiction.

The Book of Mormon itself directs readers to read the book with an open mind and then ask God if it is true. This is found in Moroni 10:4, which says, "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost."

Did Obama send the FBI to raid the Mormon food canaries?

No. The situation regarding the food production system of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) has been blown way out of proportion. Under the old system, church farms and orchards were cared for and harvested by volunteers from local congregations, then processed and canned in church canneries, also by local volunteers. The food items were then distributed for free to the needy or purchased at cost by the public.

Recent changes in federal food production and distribution guidelines, as well as financial needs, have required the church to change their system. Anyone working or volunteering at the farms, orchards, and canneries must go through a more lengthy and intense training program, meaning that each location will likely have a small group of assigned workers, rather than accepting any willing volunteers. Additionally, while canneries will continue distributing church-produced foods, most will no longer be canning the items on-site.

The official statement from the Church published in June 2013 says: "Over the past several weeks, misinformation and unnecessary concern has been circulating on blogs, over social media channels and by email regarding changes in operations at the church's home storage centers, which are located in the U.S. and Canada. No home storage centers are being closed, but the church is making welcomed modifications in its operations at most of these centers that will help to better serve the needs of members of the church, as well as significantly improve efficiency.

"In all but 12 of the church's 101 home storage centers in the U.S. and Canada, patrons will no longer self-can products, but they may purchase these same items pre-canned or prepackaged at no additional cost. The church currently operates 101 home storage centers in the United States and Canada where food storage items such as beans, dry milk, wheat, rice and sugar may be purchased. These changes have been considered for some time as the church has looked at the best way to provide home storage goods to church members efficiently. Much of the discussion regarding this issue has suggested that this change is due to food safety regulation. While it has been a factor, the concern expressed regarding that issue has been overstated."

Is god from another planet mormon belief?

No. The doctrine and scripture of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) never says that God lives on another planet. It does briefly mention that a planet called 'Kolob' is "nearest to the throne of God" (see Pearl of Great Price, Abraham Chapter 3), but it does not say that God lives there, only that He lives near there. Mormons believe that God lives in the Celestial Kingdom of Heaven, where all mankind may dwell with Him if they choose to obey Him.

What is the same about Jews and Mormons and Muslims?

They're all adherents to Abrahamic faiths, and all are monotheists, in that they all believe in one God.

However, like other Christians, Mormons believe that "God" is a group made up of Jesus Christ, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit -- which arguably removes them from the definition of "monotheists."

Jews, Mormons, and Muslims have similar standards of modesty and morality and emphasize close-knit families. Check out the "related links" below to compare these standards.

Do Mormons hold the true church?

Answer 1

That is a matter of personal belief. Personal beliefs cannot be proved, and no one can answer for someone else.

Obviously the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) do believe it is the true church. Church members encourage others to decide for themselves if the church is true. You can learn more about the church and how to decide if it is true at the "Related Links" below.

Answer 2

If you hold the Nicene Creed to be binding and a required set of faith doctrines to be a Christian, Mormonism is not a Christian faith. The most commonly cited violation of the Nicene Creed is the way that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are divided in Mormonism as opposed to the Creed. However, Mormonism is much closer to Christianity than any other faith and has many "Christian" hallmarks such as the entire concept of the Messianic-Divine Salvation and prophetic legacy.
