How do Mormons choose the land to build their churches?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) chooses land for their churches based on a variety of factors. Local zoning laws, accessibility, street traffic, size, and price are all taken into account. Because the church is organized geographically (rather than members attending whichever congregation they like best), the building needs to be in the neighborhood of those who will attend. The land needs to be zoned by the city for large non-residential buildings, and preferably allow for a steeple. It also needs to meet traffic and building laws by having enough entrances to a parking lot, enough space for parking, space to expand the building's size in the future (if necessary), access to utilities, etc.

Where was the Mormons first saloon was it the occidental saloon that was on 100 south and state street in Utah in the 1870'until it was sold in 1880?

Nope. First, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) never owned a saloon. Perhaps an individual member of the Church did, but the Church itself never owned a saloon.

Second, the Occidental Saloon at 16 East 100 South in Salt Lake City was around in the 1930's, but there are no records of it being there prior to the Prohibition era.

There was an Occidental Saloon owned by a Billy Wilson in the 1890's, but it was in Provo.

Are Mormons allowed to play on Sunday?

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that the ten commandments given to Moses are still in force today. As such, they try to "Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy". This is generally viewed as a command to rest from the routine labors of daily life and give special attention to spiritual matters, including worship services, but may also include visiting the sick, study of the scriptures and other uplifting material, fasting for special spiritual guidance, spending "quality time" with family, etc. Each member of the Church has the freedom (and obligation) to prayerfully decide what specific activities do or do not violate the spirit of that commandment and will be held accountable before God for their observance (or lack thereof). We also respect the rights of others, both inside and outside of the Church to make those decisions for themselves. Our 11th Article of Faith states: "We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may." So I suppose the real answer to your question is, some may choose to while others do not. I suppose you'd have to get into a lengthy debate or description of the nature and purpose of specific "play" activity to determine whether or not it would be in harmony with God's commandments. Playing a board game with my children on a Sunday afternoon seems fine to me, but we probably would not go play basketball or swimming. But again, there aren't "Sabbath Police" running around to enforce any LDS doctrine. Joseph Smith said: "I teach them correct principles and they govern themselves."

There are 2 LDS churches per block in Utah?

In some places, yes, but not on every block in the whole state! There are so many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) in Utah that there are 5,000 congregations in the state! Since there isn't nearly enough land to hold that many church buildings, most church buildings in Utah house 3 or 4 congregations of about 300-400 members each. The congregations share the building by meeting at different times. Most of the time, one congregation will be in Sunday School while another congregation is using the sanctuary/chapel for their main worship service.

You can see the "Related Links" below to see some places in Utah where there are multiple churches near each other.

What were physical features on the Mormon trail?

The physical features on the Mormon trail was that of total nature. Lots of brush, trees, wild flowers (depending on the time of year) there were rocks, hills, wholes on the ground the people had to walk across. In the winter in was freezing snow and rain and many died from hunger and weather conditions. They had to walk through rivers, summer and winter and carry everything they owned and hope they didn't loose it down the river. The people pulled and pushed hand carts. The trail was always dusty and dirty for them. They had wild animals to contend with and insects too.

Are Mormons cool?

Mormons are COOL. No doubt about it. It may not be the ''worlds'' type of ''cool'', but its always fun to be around Mormons, Mormons are clean, whoesome, loving, caring people. people who you can definetly trust. there are active Mormons and non active. Think of it as a volcano, the more active it is and the more it erupts, the better. extinct volcanos are the opposite. hope it helps.

**It also depends on how and where the "Mormon" was raised. I was raised Mormon in Utah. Here it is (generally, not always) expected that if you are Mormon, you are Mormon. You follow all the rules with out question. No sex until marraige. No alcohol ever. No smoking or any other non-medicinal drugs, etc. Not a bad way to live and I have a lot of respect for the ideals. However, they didn't suit me or who i wanted to be, so I was ostrasized from my community. The outcast. This is a very Utah Mormon way to handle the outside ideals. Many (in fact probably all) Mormons that I've ever met outside of Utah have been very open and accepting. I don't mean to bash on the Utah Mormons, like i said I have a lot of respect for how they choose to live their lives. I just don't appreciate the lack of respect I get for how I choose to live mine.

What are some holy items of the Mormon faith?

Most members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) would probably be a little confused at this question. The word "sacred" is more often used than "holy" in the Church. Things that Church members consider sacred or holy might include:

The Temple: There are currenly 130 operating temples worldwide. Temples are considered sacred buildings and are dedicated to God. They are separate from the common church meetinghouses used for Sunday worship. In temples, worthy Church members can participate in the most sacred ordinances and covenants offered in the Church. It is also a place where one escape the world and quietly commune with God.

similarly, Temple Ordinances and Garment: Church members consider the ordinances received in the temple to be extrememly sacred. They do not talk about them outside the walls of the temple and are extremely offended when they are mocked. Those who have received the ordinances wear a garment at all times as a reminder of the covenants made. The garment is also considered sacred. Church members try to avoid it's touching the ground or being shown to others.

The Scriptures, including the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price are considered the sacred word of God. While the books themselves are not generally treated as sacred objects, as they are in some religions (such as Islam and Sikhism), the words contained in them are sacred.

The body and life are also considered sacred. Church members advocate virtue, chastity, and modesty because the body is a sacred creation and gift from God. They oppose abortion and abuse because life is also a sacred gift.

Is God a prisoner of gravity thus needing bones to get around as the Mormon God has?

No, I believe that God is the creator of the world and lives in heaven. There is no gravity in heaven, but I am not sure because I have never asked God. How are we suppose to know? We have not seen Him. Sorry if this is a bad answer.

A Mormon's answer:

(the above answer is not a bad answer, btw...)

While Mormons believe that God has a body of flesh and bone, it is not a mortal body. Mortal bodies are subject to the forces of nature, such a gravity, but immortal bodies, such as those of God and resurrected beings (angels and the like), are not subject to forces of nature. When a Mormon says that God has a body, they simply mean that when you see God, He looks like a man. They get this belief from the many times that the Bible mentions body parts in relation to God as well as the testimony of Stephen seeing God in the Book of Acts. Also, Joseph Smith claimed to have seen God the Father and said that He was in the form of a man as well.

What is promescuity?

someone who gives their body freely

What is the Mormon term for church territories like the Catholic term 'parish'?

In the context that a parish serves a particular congregation or group of local members, the nearest equivalent in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("Mormon church") is called "a unit".

The larger of these units is usually called "a ward".

If its membership size, however, is small, it is generally referred to as "a branch". Some can be so small as to actually be called, "dependent branches", where the Priesthood leadership and direction for the branch is actually dependent upon a nearby larger unit.

Various local wards or units when combined with other nearby units comprise an organized "stake", which is presided over by a stake president, and is highly organized. This arrangement might be closer to the Roman Catholic 'diocese'.

Where Mormon sleep?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) sleep however it is customary in their nation or culture. This means that in most Western countries, they sleep on beds. In other countries, they may sleep on floor mats or in hammocks - whatever is commonly done in the area where they live.

Mormon Pioneers often slept on the ground under their wagons or in tents as they were crossing the plains.
