What is causing the hard shift from first to second gear the unusually high shift points and the constant down shifting at highway speeds on my 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5 auto with 164000 miles?

It's possibly from a sticking brake that is making the car's computer sensor think that you're slowing down, therefor down-shifting. I just got a 97 legacy wagon with similar problems, a friend pointed out that my front left brake was hot after less than two miles of driving and said that this could fool the computer. I am broke and can't go to a mechanic yet, so I don't know if this info is correct or not. I hope I'm not steering you wrong, good luck with your problem.

When is it safe to have a passenger on your motorcycle?

Here's are the answers given in Timberwoof's Motorcycle FAQ: How do I ride with a passenger? Dont, until you have enough solo experience. After that, go slower and brake earlier. How much experience should I have? Some people are perfectly capable of carrying passengers right away; others need a year or two of riding experience. Unlike luggage, passengers are heavy, floppy, and move by themselves. What do I need to tell my passenger? Tell them not to ride with you. Tell them that if theyre gonna ride with you they have to wear safety gear (helmet, gloves, boots, leather or Cordura jacket and at LEAST long pants). Tell them to look over your inside shoulder in a turn and never to put their feet down until you tell them to dismount. And HOLD ON. It depends on your personal preference and the type of bike, along with your level of experience. I personally would rather have that person on a different bike next to me than on the back of mine, since usually passengers are not riders themselves, and therefore do not understand that their movements are felt and need to be counteracted by the driver. make sure they know to NOT PUT THEIR FEET DOWN DURING A TURN. I've stopped giving rides to my friends because they do not understand this concept and are endangering themselves and me. I do think it's good for you to ride with a passenger at least once, to know what it's like in case you need to in an emergency. WHen I was 18 and had just gotten my license, my dad made me ride with him on the back so i would know what it would feel like. Once I was confortable with that, he shifted more and more to make me realize how squirmy passengers can be. I HIGHLY recommend an experience like this.. Another good thing to tell your passenger would be "Don't lean" a passenger should always stay perfectly straight with the bike! Turning their head to look at the scenery is perfectly fine but the second they lean one way or the other, they throw off the balance of the bike and the driver is tasked with correcting. The day I got my bike on the road, first time I wasn't a passenger, I went and picked up my girlfriend and gave her a ride... she had never been on a bike before so when we took the first turn, she got scared thinking we were going to fall and leaned the opposite way. In doing so she almost sent us off the side of the road. Luckily I knew how to correct. If you're going to have a rider on the back make sure they know not to lean... she never did it again!

Is motorcycle dangerous?

yes, and i can think of 4 reasons:

EXHIBIT A: you have very little protection in a crash
EXHIBIT B: most dont have a spedometer, and you can rear-end a car
EXHIBIT C: they have less traction for brakes, so rear-ending cars is more common
EXHIBIT D: they...alter the mind. most people say they are "(dumb) king of the road and believe they always have the rightaway at intersections.

Can two children ride on back of a motorcycle in Georgia?

You need to check with the Georgia's state of motor vehicles to see what the law says. I would personally say no not under any circumstances.

Why you should ride a motorcycle without a helmet?

Because you have this strong urge to volunteer as an organ donor...

No, seriously - IMO you should never ride w/o a helmet.

For what they cost, they improve your chances of coming through an accident or a fall alive a tremendous amount, which seems like a good thing to me.

Some people think that helmets are "uncool", uncomfortable or that they're so skilled riders that they don't need them, or that it should be their choice to take that risk.

Me, I'd take the protection ahead of the style points any day. Alive and nerdy seems better than dead cool.

Is a 2005 Harley Fatboy a poor starter bike?

If you are brand new to riding, this is a lot of bike for a novice. Most novice riders really should get some experience on something smaller, however there is no law against starting out with a big bike. I would not tell a friend or family member to start on anything they can not pick up if they lay it down.

I am a 5' 4" tall, 48 year old woman. I was very glad that I spent 2 summers as a beginner on an 883 sportster before I bought my 2005 Fatboy. I have learned to be much more careful because the bigger bike is not nearly as nimble. The Fatboy has a lower center of gravity, and is much more comfortable to ride. The previous answer is very much correct about picking the bike up. You do not want to dump a Fatboy. It is a lot heavier than a sportster.

Is it legal for a 12 year old to drive a 49cc scooter in Ohio?

What is a stoppie?

The opposite of a wheelie. According to Timberwoof's Motorcycle FAQ, "A stoppie is when you stop with the front brake in such a way that you purposely bring the rear wheel off the ground." Stoppies are kind of a dangerous trick. It is when you stop on the front wheel, weight forward, and being the rear wheel off the ground to a balance position. The reason why it is SO dangerous is because if the bike stops faster than you think that it will, you may flip over the handlebars. And the bike may also land on you. So if you are going to try this trick be REALLY careful. Also called an Endo,,,,,,,,,,,, Since this question is on the safety section I will suggest that you don't do it.. Unless you are professional and since you are asking the question my guess is that you are not... Answer unless you are a dare devil then in which case we can not and absolutely will not be able to be held legally response able for your idiotic actions.

How many feet per second is 90 mph?

There are 5,280 feet in a mile. So 90 miles per hour is 475,200 feet per hour. (90 x 5280)

475,200 divided by the 60 minutes in the hour comes out to 7920 feet per minute. Dividing 7920 feet per minute by the sixty seconds in a minute comes to 132 feet per second.

This is also, if you are interested, 44 yards per second. (132 feet per second divided by three feet in a yard)

If I wear a motorcycle helmet and I have an accident will my insurance cost be lower than they would if I wasn't wearing a helmet?

Higher because they will see it as you are more of a health liability because you don't wear your helmet, thus more head trauma is likely in the event of a crash, than if you do wear a helmet, where less head trauma is likely. The less head trauma, the less medical expenses they will have to pay, so the less you will have to pay.

Is there a CC limit on motorcycles when a 15 and a Half gets their permit?

That depends on where you live. In some countries, you are limited to a certain amount of horsepower and engine size based on age and experience. The UK is one example. In the US, there are no limits legally, but new riders should avoid the 600cc and 1000cc race replicas. Heavy, 1200-2000cc cruisers are also not a good idea, because they are heavy and expensive. New riders will likely lay them down and damage them. A good first bike would be a Ninja 250R or Hyosung 250 if you like the race replica style, or an SV650S if you like a standard (naked/streetfighter) style. A Honda Rebel also works well, and is the bike of choice for MSF courses. Most of the time, these will keep their value decently well (they aren't very expensive, so little value to lose) so that you don't lose very much money when you upgrade to a larger bike, as nearly everyone eventually does - aside from those who decide motorcycles are not for them or don't care about performance or style and just like fuel economy.

Are motorcycle accidents covered under no fault insurance?

In Minnesota they are not and so I am sure other no-fault states are similar. However, the motorcyclist can make a claim for personal injuries against the at-fault party, if there is one.

Do you have to wear a shirt when riding a motorcycle?

No, but remember that if you lay it down at 30 miles per hour on asphalt you will lose an inch of skin and bone a second.
